Tyvek sleeves question, which are currently half off ..

hello, I just received a box of tyvek sleeves from protective-clothing.net as they are having a half off sale on them this month.
My question is whether these sleeves are the grade of tyvek that can be used repeatedly? I ask as the sleeves look and feel just like tyvek coveralls which i have read are good only for a few cycles due to pore warping.
Thanks

I used sleeve material without problems until I switched to SFDs.
No problems for me.
This being true, it has been suggested that repeated autoclave cycles can tend to increase the pore size of tyvek and that this might lead to contams as time progresses.
I can only say that I used mine for at least 20-30 cycles and have yet to throw them away. (I recently was forced to use them again and did not see any problem)
Take care,
JD

Synthetic Filter Disk
They rock.
There are also cellulose based types. Check Aloha Medicinals for why they might be preferable.
Good luck,
JD

John says, unlike regular filters, the Cellupore filters will survive hundreds of autoclave cycles without degrading or allowing contaminates to pass. He gets his from from Gusmer Enterprises, grade 1975 SD, Size: 2-3/4 dia. (they fit a regular size mason jar lid).

Yes, apparently the pores in tyvek filters are increased by repeated use, and that, over time, this can lead to failures.
I have not seen this myself yet, and have used only the SFDs from Fungi Perfecti thus far.
Good stuff.

oh i thought you guys are talking about tyvek used in bags while in the PC. i use SFD on my jars also. they are great but, not all are good quality like you said. i dont like using tyvek on my jars because i end up cutting them when i tighten the jars. maybe thats just me. dont know my own strength. haha

Tyvek sleeves used in filter patch bags during PC as shown in the sawdust woodchip prep video will last essentially forever. We have been using the same box of sleeves for six years now, sterilizing up to 400 pounds of sawdust daily. If you're cutting them for use as jar filters, the pore size definitely changes and can lead to problems after a few uses. Synthetic filter disks are far superior. RR
