I was packing boxes just after making that post and found a notebook that has like a dozen write-ups that I had just chalked up as "lost forever" and thought I'd have to re-watch and re-write. I might just type them up rapid-fire before I move and then take hiatus.
There's no yet!
It's never ! This is just a temporary setback.

The Kid Brother (U.S., 1927)
This film isn't so much great as it is ground-breaking. The stunts were, for it's day, audacious, and the physical humor of Harold Lloyd was nice and original- not a Charlie Chaplin imitator in an era that saw many. This one was about a kid brother of some guy, and he's kind of autistic or something and then he becomes a normal guy, apparently. It's short length was pleasant.

Ashes and Diamonds (Poland, 1958)
This is an excellent bit of "New Wave" cinema that tells its whole story in a day; the last day of World War II. A young Polish assassin called Maciek is sent to a rural village to kill some high-ranking Soviet official. He finds a tranquility in the village that he'd never known before that day. He falls in love with some bumpkin and gets distracted from his mission. This handsome film is about uncertainties: war, peace, love, life, and death. And the last scene of the film is so comically twisted that it leaves the viewer full of uncertainty. Awesome movie.
REBEL FOR A CAUSE: The Polish star of the film, Zbigniew Cybulski, became a Soviet Bloc sex symbol after the release of this film , often referred to as "The James Dean of the East".

Jacob's Ladder (U.S., 1990)
This one really tricks ya! I went into it expecting a more or less straight-forward horror film, but ended up with a lot of fascinating notions to consider about an afterlife. Jacob (Tim Robbins) is a dead soul trapped in some kind of purgatory, but he doesn't know it (this movie is a lot less stupid than 'The 6th Sense'). As he slowly figures it out, his mind pretty much unravels and he goes through a literal hell trying to get back to a life that he no longer belongs in. Robbins was great, per usual. I'd really recommend this to someone who likes a spiritually thought-provoking film in the framework of a horror flick.
CONNECTING: When I watched this one, my father had only been dead for a few weeks, and, as Jacob had children who factored into the film, I was able to connect to it on a level that was previously unavailable to me. Ultimately, while Jacob is in Hell, this movie made me think about an afterlife, which I sometimes find comforting.

Honestly, I want to start watching more Polish cinema. I always enjoy it, but I tend to focus on Italy or France. Gotta start branching out more. And fuck yeah, watch it.

Hi Burke I loved the picture from the Polish film with the automatic weapons. The guy on the left looks like a cross between Lou Reed and Walton Goggins. Tarantino would be envious.
I think maybe the reason you're getting burned out (besides the sheer number of films) is the number of old movies. When I was growing up with four channels, I had no choice but to appreciate some oldies. Really liked Bogart in Dead Reckoning. But now that their are so many outlets for movies I seldom pick the old ones.

Very interesting man. I'm in my early 30s and grew up with VHS and cable, so going back is a real treat for me a lot of the time, but I think I need to work out some kind of system. Like watch a film from each decade and then repeat. One thing I'm doing is working on knocking all the 6+ hour films out of the way; makes the slope seem less steep. Also, after I get the rest of these write-ups out of the way that I have in my notebook, I'm taking like a month off. Hopefully return with renewed vigor- I really don't want this project to seem like a chore or obligation.
Which brings me to another point: I can't emphasize how much I appreciate the input and conversation posters like yourself, akira_akuma, and Cannibal Concubine have put into this thread. At this point, I feel like we're in it together.
@ Tarantino (I love most of his films, but fucking hate him.)

This thread is one of my all-time favorites. There's always good discussion going on, and I am discovering lots of films I've never heard of, along with being reminded of old classics.
