Cagney is definitely one of my favorite actors in all of gangster cinema. I feel like even today, his style is mimicked by actors in gangster movies and shows.

Steamboat Bill, Jr. (U.S., 1928)
Buster Keaton plays the titular character, a college graduate and city slicker who goes to stay with his father, Steam Boat Bill. The elder Bill is taken aback by his son’s foppishly child-like nature. The younger Bill falls for the daughter of Bill Sr.’s enemy, another boat captain. And then blah, blah, blah, happy ending. I don’t are for Buster Keaton and just did not think this was a good movie. But whatever, I watched it.

City Lights (U.S., 1931)
This one stars Charlie Chaplin as his “little tramp” who falls in love with a poor blind girl. Due to a drunken on-again-off-again friend of the tramp, she thinks he’s a millionaire, and he decides to play along to impress her. Can’t tell you much else without ruining the ending, aside from the fact that it’s always funny and often touching. As always, Chaplin was involved with every aspect of production, and it’s pretty flawless; a very cute, funny romance movie, this one. Like most Chaplin films, I’d watch it again.
THE BEAUTY OF SILENCE: “Talkies” were the primary style of film for about 3 years when ‘City Lights’ was made. Concerned that voices would mar the cinema, he just wrote a strong score, which I think holds up nicely to the talkies of the era.

Sunset Boulevard (U.S., 1950)
"Alright, Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up now..." Insane words from an insane woman who is, largely, encouraged in her insanity. Hack writer Joe Gillis (William Holden) comes by happenstance to stay in the decaying movie star mansion owned by Norma Desmond (played so perfectly by Gloria Swanson) is the basic premise. She's got her own sinister butler and a place that might've influenced the Neverland Ranch or someshit. When we first come into this house, a funeral for a chimpanzee, in full regalia, is going on. But anyway, what I'm trying to get at is: this film is incredible. So many memorable lines, so much great acting, and the direction is great and a bit playful at times: Norma trying to look younger makes herself appear like an ancient vampire. The story is about how she's trying to get back in ("It's not a comeback, it's a return!") to the film industry with this mess of a script, and how she's just spiraling further into insanity while all of Hollywood's "yes-men" convince her that she can make it (except during a brief conversation with the C. B. Demille, who can't even bring himself to tell her what she is: a washed up has been who people feel too much pity for to tell otherwise. The dark cynicism of this film immediately captured my attention, while the play on all the old-timey Hollywood stuff kept me pretty entertained, not to mention the stuff I talk about above. Fantastic film here for pretty much anyone. WATCH IT.
FAVORITE LINE: "I am big; it's the pictures that got small."

Feels like a while since I've written about a truly great film. I need to stop fucking with Buster Keaton ASAP.

Chariots of Fire (G.B., 1981)
This tells the story (primarily) of two runners trying to get into the 1924 Olympics. It’s got all kinds of elements of societal, religious, and political commentary. As far as I can tell, this movie is the pinnacle of the “sports triumph” film- the struggle, the competition, the emotional power; it’s all present in this film. However, at its core, it’s just about two guys practicing running and that bored the hell out of me. This is a good movie for fans of sports drama films.
VANGELIS: If for no other reason, see this one for the music. It’s very stirring.

he is a classic "new-age" composer. (even though, fuck that term, new age, it doesn't really symbolize anything really... it's just a dumb way of saying "Space" or something)

Ahhhh I don't know about New Age. I have several pieces of vinyl from him and I just thought he was a synth prog guy like Tangerine Dream (who did the soundtrack to Sorcerer) and Kraftwerk and Patrick Morazz and Rick Wakeman. New Age is something different in my mind.

ahh, some people call it that though. that's why i said, i don't agree with it. New Age music to me, is like Ambient music, and flutes and shit... not spacey synths and stuff. you have Vangelis on vinyl? that's pretty wicked. have you heard anything from Kit Watkins, from Happy the Man? that is some more New Age-y type stuff, that's actually good and not your cliche windy flute stuff.. plus he's got the Prog keyboardist background.

I don't understand how that could be considered a good movie by anyone's standards. 28 Days Later is superior by legions in every way.

Legions,
I'm not particularly interested in 'World War Z'. I was only lukewarm on the book, and I hardly have time to watch the movies I want to watch now. But since it's a zombie movie, I'm sure I'll see it at some point.
