I would say 'Sleeper' is his best in physical humor. Great shit. I agree that his character in 'Manhattan' is very flawed in morality, but I don't know anyone who isn't.

Me neither.
I've recently started re-watching The Sopranos from the beginning, and am hooked.

Both of you: punch yourselves until you see stars, then watch 'Annie Hall'.

funny thing is, i could probably pull a Woody Allen movie randomly out of a hat full of his movies, and it'd probably be awesome.
i think i'll get Sleeper.

I loved Christopher Walken's role in Annie Hall. Suspenseful yet with some black humor

Walken could've been in 'Rubber' and still would've been a don. There is literally no movie not made instantly better just by having Walken in its cast.

This is very true. His scene in Pulp Fiction makes an already fantastic film even more classic. In his five minutes of screen time, he belts out almost as many quotable lines as Jackson and Travolta do throughout the entire film it seems.

Too true. The man's just cinematic magic, from serious stuff like 'Deer Hunter' to silly-ass 'Joe Dirt'. He's just great.

That is -- I did not realize that was Walken! Of course, I also haven't seen that film in well over a decade.

Our Hospitality (U.S., 1923)
This one is another Buster Keaton flick where he plays, again, a quirky city-slicker who goes to stay with family members down south who still very much hold to Confederate values. A series of humourous incidents occur, and that’s the damn movie. I don’t find Keaton funny, so I didn’t like this one. He’s too dead-pan for silent pictures; the humor doesn’t come across (at least to me). These films made Keaton a household name back in the day, and I do not know why.

The General (U.S. 1927)
This is probably my favorite Buster Keaton film because his screen time is so minimal. It’s about a band of Union soldiers who disguise themselves Confederates and steal a train to head north in. They get into a buttload of trouble and hilarity ensues. This movie had funnier titling, acting, and stories than any Keaton film I’d seen previously, but that’s not saying much; I just don’t like this guy’s films. I think I’m gonna try to knock them all out of the way early.

Aileen Wournos: The Selling of a Serial Killer (U.S., 1992)
I’m guessing that enough of you have seen ‘Monster’ to know a bit about Aileen Wuornos, but there’s still so much more to know! For example, in watching this, I learned that after Wuornos got arrested but before she got sentenced, this lunatic woman named Something Palle legally adopted Aileen. This woman now charges 25K to give interviews about her “daughter” that she’d never even heard of before the arrest. Also, Wuornos has a lawyer who obviously influenced Saul Goodman. This guy is just a slimy fuck trying to make every nickel off of Wuornos as he can. This documentary features a few incredible interviews and some “stranger than fiction” type people. Highly recommend.
O SHIT WHATTA BITCH: Every time I watch or read something about this (Wuornos is very fascinating as the main “female serial killer”), I’m always astounded at how rail-roaded she got by her lover, yet Aileen still loved that woman. Mind-blowing.

Burke, did you feel that Monster was accurate after watching this. I was specifically thinking of the two scenes in Monster, where the johns tried to help her. In the first instance she let him go and in the second she kills him anyway. This took away a lot of the sympathy one might gain for her circumstances.

I'm gonna watch Yol next. I'm curious about Turkish culture ever since seeing 'Head-On'.
Btw, Burke, the list of all the films is missing from your op. Link died. Is 'The Discreet Charm of the Bourgasie' on that list?

Watching 'Yol' is definitely worth it. Try to watch it without cultural norms as we know them.
Also, thank you for your notation of the dead link. I'll fix it ASAP, just too tired at the moment.
Same to you, Brian Jones. Appreciate the question, but i'm gonna sleep and think about it before I form an opinion. It's been a while since I've seen 'Monster', so I'm gonna have to re-watch that to give a better answer. Also, we have to remember that 'Monster' is just one writer's, one studio's, idea of the Wuornos case. There're are so many things about her that we'll never understand.

The Public Enemy (U.S., 1931)
Initially, I thought that ‘Scarface: The Shame of a Nation’ was the prototype for all gangster movies, but after seeing ‘The Public Enemy’, I see that ‘Scarface’ is pretty much a straight rip off. This one has a similar plot: it follows young Tommy Powers and his rise to near the top of organized crime world, which at that time was the underground bootleg booze game. It deals with the morality of it all, which is portrayed through the depiction of Powers’ mother and brother. James Cagney does an exceptional job playing Powers. If you’re looking for the “O.G.” of gangster movies, this is it. It was so gangster in fact, that this film was the catalyst for the Production Code, the rules that governed film for the next 3 decades or so.
SUCH SIMILARITY: ‘Scarface’ borrowed so much from this film that they even have similar opening titles, which disclaim that the film glorifies gangs and crime, but is being used as a piece of cinema to open the public’s eyes to the dangers around them. These days we call that “hype”.
