Man, thank you very much for the info! I love all the trivia I'm learning from other cinephiles. Your contributions to the project have been great.

@Burke,
I didn't look at the list that you had watched before you started this thread.
Is that movie "The Grey Zone" on there by any chance? I seen the pianist on there. I just watched it 2 days ago. It really REALLY good. The Grey Zone is another movie about the holocaust. This one is more grim though.

While I thank both Cannibal Concubine and MH777 for their inquiries, I'm sorry to tell you that neither film is listed in my book. Keep in mind, I'm operating from the initial press, which is a 2003 edition. Every year since the book has been re-arranged and some movies are added and some are dumped. After I complete the initial project that this is, I'm hoping to make a "spin-off' thread of the additions/subtractions. This is a real project that will take years; should I unexpectedly pass away, I do hope you guys suitably finish the project for me.
But if you're ever wondering if a movie is in my book, ask yourself, "Did this film come out after 2003?" If the answer is "yes", then no, your film, amazing as it might be, isn't in my book. But don't worry, I'll get to it.

That's weird because "Empire of the Sun" is from 1987. It's a fantastic movie and I highly recommend you check it out.

Isn't that Christian Bale's debut? I think I've seen it. Remember liking it, but not thinking too deep on it. Perhaps should review.

Reds (U.S., 1981)
This socio-politic biography of American journalist and activist Jack Reed is epic in scope. From his beginnings as a front-line journalist to when he’s living in Russia Warren Beatty’s Reed is a very fascinating man. The semi-fictionalized scenes are interspersed with “talking head” style interviews with people who actually knew Reed, and that gives his character so much depth while keeping it minimal. Very clever. While I wouldn’t call this a comedy, there are some very funny lines. There’s a romantic sub-plot with Diane Keaton playing Reed’s wife that’s pretty great, but I’m biased in matters Keaton. While it’s a very long movie, you don’t ever get too bored, and sometimes that’s all you can ask for in a movie. But this one delivers that and more; I thought it was a real nice bio-pic.
COMMITMENT: In true “auteur” style, Warren Beatty wrote, directed, produced, and starred in ‘Reds’. I like that; it shows vision, when it’s not done in a vain-glorious manner like how Tarantino does.

Yeah, he's great in it. Plays part of a love triangle. When Nicholson's on, he's on. Very reserved acting from him in that one; he plays "coy" well.

Haha, yeah. Real tear jerker, but Nicholson livens it up and keeps a nice balance with the drama. Another film that shows true acting chops in Jeff Daniels. That one was written by Larry McMurtry, who won an Oscar for his screenplay and was directed by James L. Brooks, one of the mastermind producers behind 'The Simpsons'.
I've been meaning to see Five Easy Pieces for a while (I think it's part of this project, actually), and let me tell you: Prizzi's Honor is tremendous. I may have reviewed it in this thread, but it may have been one of the 231 films I saw before I started this. I've completely lost track and my mind.

In Reds I liked Maureen Stapleton (Edith Bunker's sister) as the famous anarchist Emma Goldman. I liked her commentary about her initial optimism about the Soviet Union and how it turned into disillusionment and a sense of betrayal as history played itself out and it turned into a paranoid police state.
Jack Nicholson plays Eugene O'Neil the famous playwrite who was having an affair with Reed's wife.

I'll revisit it whenever I get a good chance.
Sometimes it happens where you (or I do this, at least) think a movie that I really liked would be on the list but isn't, and it confounds me. I'll feel all like a movie should've taken the place of another, but that's sort of the fun of the project. I watch A LOT of amazing movies, but every now and then, I bite the bullet and watch one I know I'll dislike for the sake of the project, LOL.
But yeah, I'll definitely re-watch Empire of the Sun again. I remember liking it, but little else. Swiss cheese memory.

Manhattan (U.S., 1979)
The follow-up to ‘Annie Hall’, this filmed love letter to Manhattan is some of Woody Allen’s finest work. It’s got all the wit, self-deprecation, and neuroses that so many New Yorkers do, and at one point, Allen even gives a reason for this (watch it to learn). It’s typical Allen fare; he’s his usual character and is in difficult relationships: his super WASP girlfriend (a lovely Diane Keaton) and his ex-wife, a career driven Ice Queen played by Meryl Streep (and this is the film that possibly typecast her in that role). Just dripping with love for Manhattan, this movie hardly needs characters. But since they’re there, they’re the best possible characters. Funny, touching, philosophical, this is easily Allen’s second greatest film. Watch it.

Manhattan seemed like Woody Allen's wet dream to me. He's fucking a high schooler. And what's more is that he doesn't think he loves her. Instead he lets her love him fiercely while all the time he has this uninterested look on his face. It is like Allen is being worshiped by this girl. His character's life isn't perfect, obviously, but to me his character came off as an idol to be worshiped. I still thought the was worth watching because I enjoy Allen's sense of comedy. I need to see sleeper, that one looks better to me.
