What a weird movie. Disturbingly weird, like "The Twilight Zone."

It's a must see movie for stoners AND people who won't touch a drug. But it's not my favorite movie to see stoned; it's long and only understood if you listen to the dialog.

The best movie while stoned is Yellow Submarine. It's also the only movie I'll watch tripping (thought you don't understand the story despite how simple it is)

Um, because it goes something like:
We haaa too bg of gra,
five shee of hi pwer mesline,
awhole galxe of multicoloredduppersdownersscreamerslaughers

eh, that's the best way I can portray mumbling in text.
But it takes you a couple of times to understand what the heck they are saying.
That's why some people can't stand the movie, although if you can sit through it a couple times you really appreciate it.

hunter s thompsons books are all great.

The movie is a good repsentation of the book.  The artwork of Ralph Steadman played a big part in the way the characters were created.

My problem is when I tripped and saw the movie. I started to hear the dialog in the book throughout the movie. Stuff that was never in the movie. I still can't watch the movie without thinking of the books dialog.

I have the criterion collection DVD. It has great clips of hunter and johnny depp. And One BBC special from the 70's about hunter.

Because I'm "hard of hearing". After seeing it on DVD, I could understand the dialogue and plot of the film much better than I previously had.

The book is awesome, much better than the movie. I'm halfway through the Great Shark Hunt (Gonzo Papers, Vol. 1) which is also really good. I don't think any movie could capture his style but fear & loathing was a good attempt.

I just finished reading Fear and Loathing, and I really liked it. It's very strange but entertaining and it's a great movie to watch tripping because you don't know if what you are seeing is in the movie or because you are tripping...lol.

god, i LOVE that movie, it just has so many great moments "a drug person can learn to cope with seeing their dead grandmother crawling up their leg with a knife in her teeth, but no one should be asked to handle THIS trip" lol. i just love the way Depp plays that part. the book is even better, but in some respects it is more and less confusing.

Oh, and i watch everything with captions, it's just worth it.

I love the movie... I've watched it a 1000 times over and never get sick of it. BUT, I just can't watch it on shrooms or acid. Just has way to many negative connotations in it for me to enjoy while tripping. I start to feel dirty and feel really negative. The movie just turns me on to a completly bad trip everytime.

My last mush trip I was having wierd hallucinations exactly like some in that movie...images, film clips from the TV being projected onto a blank wall in front of me...it was intense, great film if you ask me! I watched it while coming down on my first experience ever also...that movie and I go way back, hahaha, its great!

Its a pretty good movie, but it does get tiresome after a while. As always, the book is much better. It can be a downer so i'd recomend watching about 10 min of it before you trip to get a feel for it and see if you think you'd be cool watching it tripping. For me, i get a kick out of anything on tv while shrooming. Infomercials are a riot. "trippy" movies are better on acid - comedies are where its at when shrooming IMO.

Infomercials are too intense. I get way to into that shit. Thats one reason why I dont watch the TV while tripping.

I have even cried while watching the spanish channel. I was just way to into it. It was like I was totally tuning into their culture.

Ive never watched a movie while tripping. Maybe I'll try it one day just to say I did. I try and stay away from to much media while tripping with the exception of music.

The movie is pretty cool and almost an identicle visuial representation of the book. With very little missed out, except for the airport bit at the end.
I mean there is things that are metioned in the book, which isnt realy made to obvios in the film but they are still there in the background hidden away almost like an easter egg. Although wathching the film on psychedelics does seem to show some type of unrealism to it.
Just wished there was a fear and loathing 2 even if it was just the book.

Very political, too, especially the former.

I liked it. You won't understand the movie unless you read the book. Awsome book. Watch the movie while stoned unless you got a lot of patience. It kinda goes along slow... You'll see what I mean.

If you do drugs or have an interest in drugs then this movie is a must see.

About a year ago I met the lawyer whom the character of Dr. Gonzo is based on... needless to say, he was a really cool guy. He's a professor at a major university and i think is also judge. I happened to be lucky enough to sit in on his class when he told the story about Fear and Loathing and his relationship to Hunter S Thompson. A real treat that was unexpected as I was just visiting my cousin who is an actual student at the school.

Fear & Loathing is very awesome.

You can start watching it anywheres... it's just two guys in the midst of insanity. I mean even if you watch it from the beginning, you still barely know why the fuck they are doing what they're doing next, bwaha...

"I'm supposed to keep this, right?"

"Don't worry... I'll remember your face."

There is no way of explaining the terror I felt.

I've watched this movie many times, and it remains one of my all time favorites... not only for the acting and content but the directing. I'm also a big fan of Terry Gilliam, and I think Fear and Loathing is one of his best films. The cinematography is simply amazing...

Fear and Loathing is a great movie to watch, but i have never watched it while tripping, i allways whent for the yellow submarine or other cartoon movies. Howerver Fear and Loathing still remains my favorite movie, and book. I also recomend 'Kingdom of Fear' its the newest book by hunter thompson and it has some great stories in it.

the song was 'sergeant peppers lonley hearts club band' by the Beatles. However, they have some weird instrumental version of it in the movie, not sure if you will be able to find it for download, but the original version is good too. I think if you look in the book it actually tells you that was the song she was performing too before they were kicked out. Great stuff.

The guy that Dr. Gonzo was based on was a laywer in the 60s called Oscar Zeta Acosta. He went missing in 1974 and is presumed dead. More info - Clicky.

Unless, of course, he didn't die and secretly started a new life as a college lecturer I don't think it's the same guy.

Oddly I always thought that the "lawyer" was just a figment of Hunter S. Thompson's imagination. Sort of like an alter ego or spiritual scapegoat.

Raoul was a pen name Hunter used. I think he mainly used it for editorials and other writings that were sure to raise hell.

Kind of an alter ego. The madman on the inside of Thompson.

it was a good movie, would not watch it trippin, but it creates a bad vibe for psychdelics, a anti drug person would just think more worst of psychdelics, the visuals they created from the "hotal checking in" scene after he had took the acid was pretty realistic.

Hell yeah! Fear And Loathing is crazy. Literally crazy... the first time I watched it I barely understood it. And wait... I still dont understand it that much. I want to read the book. But definitely get this while on any drug.. or even sober.

Fear and Loathing is an all time favorite... there was a time when I could not come down from a trip without watching it.

Scarface is the shit too...But in a darker type of way, I think...

I bought mine at BestBuy. But if you liked the movie then you or EVERYBODY who's never read the book should read the book. The book tells a lot of what the movie didn't and you'll understand the movie more.

I've never been much of a reader but I finished Fear n Loathing in a week. It's a great book.

as a whole I think the movie is a little drawn out ...but you know I love the drug scenes!

"we cant stop here! .... its bat country!"
"was I thinking aloud? ... DId they hear me?"

I also think Fear and Loathing has scenes in it that is easily the most representative of what a trip is like .. but thats just my opinion

Have you guys seen "Where the Buffalo Roam?" From ~1980 with Bill Murray as Hunter? Good film. Isn't quite as liberal (or literal, you're usually not sure what exactly they're taking, as far as pills go). But it takes place 'on the campaign trail' and a bunch of other parts of his life.

Murray isn't quite as good as Depp, but pulls it off well. Johnny Depp was a friend of Hunter's, and spent a lot of time with him both before and after the movie was officially in the works. I'm assuming that Bill Murray didn't get quite the same opportunity, so that surely has much to do with it.

Also, *definately* check out Breakfast with Hunter. It's a bunch of pieces of interviews, etc. Mostly shot during the planning and production of the Fear and Loathing movie. But some scenes were before the movie had a cast, director, etc. (and definately not the final director, terry gilliam). Theres also footage of him in the 70s, running for mayor, as well as information about his little trial in the 90s.

http://www.us.imdb.com/title/tt0376136/

Apparently a Rum Diaries movie is in the works starring Johnny Depp.

People either think Bill Murray's portrayal was better than Johnny's or vice versa. The difference is Bill Murray was portraying the real Hunter, while Johnny was acting out the part of Hunter's charcter Raoul Duke, who is an exaggeration of Hunter himself.

Bill Murray was also a friend of Hunter's, but i don't think he ever lived with Hunter and learned to shadow his every movement like Johnny.

Both actors did a great job I think.

And yes definetly check out Breakfest with Hunter.
