as a whole I think the movie is a little drawn out ...but you know I love the drug scenes!
"we cant stop here! .... its bat country!" "was I thinking aloud? ... DId they hear me?"
I also think Fear and Loathing has scenes in it that is easily the most representative of what a trip is like .. but thats just my opinion

The rambling during the drugs scenes remind me of personal trips. Talking about non sense for hours. Great movie

Have you guys seen "Where the Buffalo Roam?" From ~1980 with Bill Murray as Hunter? Good film. Isn't quite as liberal (or literal, you're usually not sure what exactly they're taking, as far as pills go). But it takes place 'on the campaign trail' and a bunch of other parts of his life.
Murray isn't quite as good as Depp, but pulls it off well. Johnny Depp was a friend of Hunter's, and spent a lot of time with him both before and after the movie was officially in the works. I'm assuming that Bill Murray didn't get quite the same opportunity, so that surely has much to do with it.
Also, *definately* check out Breakfast with Hunter. It's a bunch of pieces of interviews, etc. Mostly shot during the planning and production of the Fear and Loathing movie. But some scenes were before the movie had a cast, director, etc. (and definately not the final director, terry gilliam). Theres also footage of him in the 70s, running for mayor, as well as information about his little trial in the 90s.

Apparently a Rum Diaries movie is in the works starring Johnny Depp.

People either think Bill Murray's portrayal was better than Johnny's or vice versa. The difference is Bill Murray was portraying the real Hunter, while Johnny was acting out the part of Hunter's charcter Raoul Duke, who is an exaggeration of Hunter himself.
Bill Murray was also a friend of Hunter's, but i don't think he ever lived with Hunter and learned to shadow his every movement like Johnny.
Both actors did a great job I think.
And yes definetly check out Breakfest with Hunter.
