Holy shit!

That's nice!
Only thing, is if it did get contaminated... how would you know?
How do you know when it's fully colonized?

Awesome idea, I wouldn't like tying my pressure cooker up for too long though, I gots to make my pot roasts :smirk:

You should write a tek with this.

How much popcorn did you use.?? water ratio etc. looks real good.

pretty cool,
but i have my doubts about using a $100 pressure cooker
as a substitute for a 50 cent jar.

could one pressurecook the grain then transfer it to an oven bag/ziplock bag ..?

I'd think PC grain, then as soon as pressure hits 0 open the lid and tansfer right away to the bag.. let cool and dump a quart of colonized grain to it!

I can only fit 7 quarts of wbs in my cooker, but the equivalent of 7 + full ones ( as one only uses 1/2 the jar on the usual tek!!

Water content remains a problem tho... that might take some trial and error!! Ie: compensate for 1 hr of steam!!

How bout measuring x amount of liters, pc it to 15psi to determine how much water you loose to steam. then add this amount to your corrent moisture level before you PC??????

Why? From start to finish this was 11 days to 100%. The reason more time was not allotted was because of the fear of contamination. It basically would not shake no matter how hard it was smacked so it was opened. This could be used to prepare twice the amount of spawn than a PC full of jars can make.

you aren't thinking this all the way thru.
in that 11 days your pc is tied up,
it could have easily processed some 200 quarts of grain.

lol
it was just the argument exterpolated,
the point being you're tying up a valuable piece
of hardware long-term that could be more efficiently
use elsewhere. a bit like using your car as a terrarium.

plz don't take me wrong,
i think it's pretty neat what you did.
it's just ,in my opinion, more of a curiosity
than a practical working tek.
when you combine the difficulty getting water content right
with no way to monitor for contams,
add in the cost of a pc only useable once every 2 weeks,
meaning no way to make dextrose water, agar, etc.
i just don't see it as very practical for most.
i'll tell you something else,
it's risky pc'ing loose grain, if any starch/kernels manage
to block the hole you could get a huge explosion.
again, not to demean your accomplishment,
but there are many more practical and efficient teks out there
for a newbie to follow.
stll, as i said , it's pretty cool as curiousities go.

well said.
my view is whatever works for you.
just as an aside,
any idea what that sucker weighed ?

one last thought. i know why they put safety plugs on pc's,
ever seen one pop ? you don't want to be anywhere nearby when it does as super-hot steam and mangled grain kernels will come blasting out with tremendous force. and if the grain plugs THAT hole, and you're gone away a bit too long,
there'll be hell to pay. and being only half full matters not, the pressure difference will suck the grain out like out of a cannon.
just from a safety point of view, it's wise to keep everything in containers if possible when operating a pressure cooker under full pressure. we don't want anyone getting burned.
