I live near Dundee. I had a quick look around my area but couldn't find anything yet. I would love to know where they usually grow.

Libs that don't produce spores. They're still active but just means they can't have children.

How does this come about? and how do you identify one, is literally the only difference that they dont have spores? in which case you would just try taking a spore print I guess. I suppose its just a freak of nature, the mycelium fucking up when its making the mushroom?
I hadn't heard of that before. This can happen with any kind of fungus I suppose?

I think it's genetic, every patch of mushrooms is different. If you look at shrooms growing from one patch of mycelium they share similar traits. Some patches are sterile.

Wettest UK summer since 1912, I'm finding that a few of my fave fields are like swampland just now!
Anyone have any theories on how our wet summer may affect our endeavours?

i know, it just strikes me as odd that so many people can just walk past a blatant patch and just ignore it i simply dont have the will power
although last weekend there were some people looking suspicious in a field but when they saw me they vanished must have thought i was on to them!, how little they know i was after the same i did have a chuckle at the paranoia though

yeah, well most people dont have a clue what a magic mushroom looks like. Sounds interesting that the spot is so blatant, all my patches are remote, up on weardale, nice places to pick
i do hear of people picking golf courses though. actually, i have picked a football pitch before now i think about it, was pretty funny just picking it with dog walkers all around and a housing estate around it overlooking it, apparently everyone knows what your doing there and they dont care, theyre used to it. but its a shit spot really so i dont bother.

I have not looked in any spots as yet but regarding south of England my guess is it will currently be a waste of time other than a pleasant walk. Give it 4-6 weeks. I mean you might find the odd one or 2 but you would be very lucky atm.
May also add another photo request, most beautiful misty lib territory landscape photo ?
Another good ID tip if you are not sure is splitting the edge of the mushroom very very gently with your fingers and looking for the jelly like opauqe veil (pellicle). The photo shots in dispute do look like sterile libs to be too but I would not eat them. Always best to be 100pct sure. I am gonna be super strict on Qaulity Control if I pick any this year, I might just go out and photo some this year.
I picked some absolute giants last year, I did not know they could get that big, like 3.5cms high and 2.5 - 3cms diameter
I see people all the time where I pick but other shroom pickers only on occasion.

Here's a couple of updated pictures of the 'sterile libs'. Now they are dry, they look more like libs that ever - so much so that I'd probably eat these despite saying that i wouldn't in an earlier post.

I've moved since the last season into Brighton, and although I do know of a few spots around here, there are always people walking their dogs or also shroom hunting. I hope to find a P. cyanescens patch this year.
