Walking with Cavemen
    #1637079 - 06/16/03 10:04 AM (21 years, 13 days ago)

This is an outstanding pseudo-documentary on the rise and fall of different pre-hominid species. This is being shown on the Discovery Channel and hosted by Alec Baldwin who does the voice-over narration. Mixing computer animation and live actors in fantastic makeup, this show covers several million years and about eight different branches on our family tree as to tool use, diet, how they hunted and survived and why they died out.

If you are into anthropolgy, evolution or pre-history, do not miss this special!

I didn't like the style of the "Walking with.." series'. It seemed that they placed most of the emphasis on entertainment rather than education... meaning that a lot of the ideas they used seemed to be opinions or theories presented as fact. Might just be me though...I hear it won a lot of awards and what have you.

I watched some of it last night, I tuned in a bit late though. It was very well done and informative, I look forward to the rebroadcast so I can catch the whole thing. The computer animation was stellar. When I started watching there were 2 brothers(?), Neanderthals I think, hunting a massive type of elk and it killed one of them. It looked very nearly real, and the presentation made me feel sympathetic to struggles of the various types of hominids. I hope Discovery puts together a dvd set, I'd buy it in a minute.

I enjoyed the program for what it was worth. Just thinking about how long ago those species lived really humbles you. To think entire cultures and their realities rose, ruled and vanished...wonder where our species will be another 100,000 years from now.

hahah, that's right when I came in to it!!

I'm glad someone else posted this, because I wanted to post something, and I guess i'll have to thread jack this a bit, here goes...

the show kept mentioning that IMAGINATION is what forced the humans to evolve, now I remember someone once mentioned that someone had hypothesized that shrooms were the driving force behind this, that maybe shrooms alowed these people to expand their minds and start thinking more abstractly, I just remembered this when I saw the show, any comments?

How did the show describe the process by which imagination forced humans to evolve?

Imagination may certainly help one to survive, but cannot be passed to the genetic level by any known mechanism.

just a quick note for anyone who missed it but wants to see it, they're showing an encore presentation tomorrow night (wednesday the 18th) on Discovery Channel...it's either 8pm or 9pm...www.discovery.com to confirm.
