ok, so I've done some extensive research into the cause of aborts for a friend of mine but I still have some questions. There seems to be a disagreement about whether too high or too low humidity is the cause of aborts. The humidity in my friends chamber is somewhere above 90%, the hygrometer does not go above 90 it just says "Hi." Also, the temperature in the chamber is about 74 degrees all the time. Cubensis growth parameters for fruiting are 74-78 degrees according to growth parameters, a link posted by Anno so I tend to trust it. There is plenty of air exchange since my friend is using a cool mist humidifier with holes in the bottom of the terrarium which always have noticeable air flow coming out of them. Also, there is indirect sunlight during the day, pretty dark at night... So I guess the question is: does anyone have any recommendations for my friend as how to perhaps create a happier growing environment for his shroomies?

sounds like your friend is doing a fine job.....no need for improvement from the sound of it...but hey what does my opinion matter I haven't even grown shrooms I've only researched this process for 6 months now....so maybe someone with actual experience could give you a better answer than me
Just thought I'd chime in tho.

....hmmm well it is my understanding that most pins become aborts....here is a quote from the tek I have bookmarked...
Quote:
For the first week or two, the cakes will generally not do anything. Then, very small bumps, called "pins," "pinheads," or "primordia" will begin to grow out of the surface of the cake. These are the beginnings of mushrooms. Many will never grow any larger. However, some will grow until they are full-grown mushrooms.
There are suppost to be a lot of aborts, however if your friend isn't seeing any pins maturing then he might have a problem...perhaps he is misting (or the cool mist humidifer) is water logging the cakes/casings....too much water on pins is bad as far as my research has said....so perhaps it is a water (humidity) problem?
How long has the cakes/casings been in the fruiting stage????

He just harvested the first of his fruits, there was about a 4:1 ration of aborts to fully grown shroomies, if this sounds about right then he's ok.

I have found that if you pick the fully grown shroomies without picking the entire flush that the cakes will grow more of the pins than if you wait for everything to become fully mature. Usually pick the rest of the shroomies off within 24 hours though.

From what I've seen aborts are usually caused by genetics. Some strains cause massive pinning which leads to a lack on nutes in the substrate to support them all causing aborts.
