Psathyrella foenesecii??? (Pics)
    #1633279 - 06/14/03 04:18 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

Okay... I found these growing in my lawn today:

(Sorry, the gill shots I took did not turn out.)

The only thing like them in my book is what it lists as Psathyrella foenesecii, or the Haymaker Mushroom.  The drawings and information in my book match up exactly for what I found, so I'm pretty sure that's what they are.

My book says "this species and a very closely related one (P. castaneifolia, not shown) are intermediate between Psathyrella and Panaeolus and have been classified in both genera.

So that means Psathyrella foenesecii is the same thing as Panaeolus foenesecii, right?  Also, based on those photos and the information below, do you think this is what I've found?

Here's the info:

CAP:

Conic, brown (different shades in different specimens), somewhat slimy in some, and streaked.  (Streaked means you can sorta see the gills through the top of the cap, right??)  Roughly 1 cm across.

STEM:

Around 5 cm x 1 mm, whitish beige in color, hollow and fragile, but fibrous.

GILLS:

Close, adnexed to adnate, light brown in color

HABITAT:

Growing scattered in grass.  Found in Northwest, PA in late spring/early summer.

SPORE PRINT:

Black

Thanks in advance for any replies!

Panaeolus foenisecii is the same mushroom as Psathryrella foenisecii (placed there by Alexander Smith in his monograph on that genus, but not accepted much by other mycologists) and Panaeolina foenisecii (placed there by mycologists who think that the fact that the spores have tiny warts instead of being smooth means they should get their own genus).

If the description matches exactly, then I would go with it.

Happy mushrooming!

There are actually four species of Panaeolina in the genera of Panaeolina.

i found about 4 or 5 P. foens growing on various lawns down here in FL this morning. that looks perfect

i also found about 15 or 20 P. castaneifolius which i discovered grew in my neighborhood yesterday. beautiful shrooms with lightly blue mycelium at the base of the stalk.

if it werent for GG it probably would have take me much longer to find this species. i can find nothing else to say but 'i give you props.'
