Anyone familiar with Jiffy Mix (for casings)?
    #1636269 - 06/16/03 01:45 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

I heard of Jiffy Mix in one of the Teks here at the shroomery. Apparently it is good to use for the top layer of a casing because it includes a good amount of lime already mixed in it....I was just wondering a few things concerning Jiffy Mix...\

1. Where can you find it? I'm guessing Gardening Store and or Home Depot...

2. Do you have to sterilize it before topping it on the casing?

3. ^ If yes...how do you sterilize it?

Ok, that's it....thanx in advance.

walmart has it pretty commonly. Yes you do need to sterilize. Simple way to sterilize any casing is microwave it for about 5 minutes in tupperware or something like it (has to have a top), stir it up with a sterilized utensil, then nuke it again for 5 minutes. Unless this casing is really weird I assume normal casing techniques work... from the 60/40 coco coir FAQ:

Clean the inside of your microwave out...use bleachy water.
Then spray the inside with Lysol.
You want to microwave your casing material in the microwave for 5 minutes.
Spray the air out side the microwave with Lysol.
Pull the container out of the microwave and stir up the casing material with a clean utensil.
Put it back in the microwave...and nuke it for another 5 minutes.

Let the casing material cool down in the microwave oven.

Spray the air with Lysol.
Pull the container out of the microwave oven.
Apply the casing material to your substrate.
Then cover both containers to keep airborne contaminants out.

only 5 minutes (well actually 10....)??? Seems really short....but I'll take your word for it unless anyone else has any objections....

What does Jiffy Mix come in? A bag? Does it have a specific name or is Jiffy Mix just that?

sounded short to me too, but I'm quoting straight from the tek. If you feel like being on the safe side PCing is probably an option as well.

I use Wally world Jiffy mix. It's called 100% All Natrual Potting Mix, and it works great. I put it in a pan and bake it at 350 degrees for an hour, then stick it in the fridge for an hour to cool down. When done, I line the bottom of my container with it, spray with H2O2/H2O, crumble up my cakes and spreadthem over the layer. Then add more Jiffy Mix until it just covers the cake crumbles, spray it down and cover with Tin Foil. 8 casings so far, one of them a six cake casing, and no failures.

Yeah that sounds a little safer IMO.

My casing tek said to use a bottom layer of verm, but hey a bottom layer of Jiffy Mix sounds just as good if not better!!!! Thanx.

I'll look for 100% All Natural Potting Mix...(where did "Jiffy Mix" come from? Is it even on the bag?)

As far as my experience goes, the 5 min/5 min in the microwave seems to work. Perhaps it's because your substrate is already colonized and is more resistant to contams. But since you are trying to sterilize and not pasturize, you could probably nuke the hell out if it if you weren't comfortable with 10 minutes. What's it going to do, sterlize it MORE?
