Would you say this is a true statement?
    #1636195 - 06/15/03 10:51 PM (20 years, 10 months ago)

The Pain you give,
Is Equal to the Pain you Receive

I'm thinking in the long run it probably is...
but at times I have my doubts.

I think you have it backwards.

The pain you receive is equal to the pain you give. I would find that true.

If one was true, wouldn't both be true?

Especially if pain can be described as a lack of love.

I'm not fond of generalizations, in general.

When we cause suffering to others, we cause suffering in ourselves simultaneously. It disturbs our peace of mind to become angry with poor drivers, verbally impatient with grocery store clerks, abusive toward disagreeable individuals.

In this way, the pain we create for others arises within ourselves, as an equal bitterness.

One can have an effect on the other, but they aren't necessarily equal.

Some people feel remorse for the things they do, some don't. It's all a matter of luck.

Maybe they are equal in a statistical sense, but there is obviously no exact correspondence at the individual level.

I like to think of it this way: The total value of a person's lifetime achievements diminishes by the exact amount of the pain that the person has inflicted on himself and on others. When a person realizes this, he might feel some pain.

Karma only works if you buy into multple lifetimes. The inventors of the karma creed realized that in one lifetime what you give and what you get (in anything) aren't necessarily going to be equal.

Reincarnation has been interpreted in many ways. Multiple lifetimes is only one of them. Karma can be understood supernaturally, spiritually, deeply personally, even scientifically.

"in the end the love you take is equal to the love you make"

it's from a Beatles song. I think it was John Lennon who wrote that...

I believe in Karma. it's simple and it's the only moral code you need.

I think that is a good way of looking at it, to an extent. Personally I think I've caused too many people suffering because at times I let the little things get to me. I'm sure it is a prepetual cycle.

I've just gotta reaffirm more often that it's not worth it to get bitter.
