Creating a small enclosed space to prevent contamination
    #1635261 - 06/15/03 02:50 PM (20 years, 7 months ago)

Hello I recently had this great idea....

Basically my last batch of mushrooms was ruined due to mold so in addition to buying filters, etc I came up with the idea that during the critical phase where I cut up the cakes and sandwich them between a thin layer of vermiculite I perform this in a small sealed temporary structure.

I was thinking of buying a tent 5 1/2 feet squared and sealed off the vents.
Before doing anything I'd spray the whole thing down with Lysol and put a HEPA filter inside. Then I'd go to work in a sterile environment.

The problem  I can't seem to find a structure suitable for this.
It seems most tents would just collapse on themselves.

Does anyone have any ideas of what else I could purchase (maybe on ebay) for a fair price that would do the trick. I don't have the patience to construct anything.

Thanks and feel free to use this idea even though its mere commonsense.

Jonathan

Well, the glove box would have been a great idea but since you don't have patience for anything, i think there's not a lot of options available.

Just work in your bathroom then with all your stuff prepared so you don't have to leave the room. Close the door and spray everywhere like a crazy hypocondriac and start your work.

I don't feel the need to build a glove box me neither and so far, I have not a lot contamination problems. I recently made a syringe and didn't test it yet. I don't know if it's sterile but I think if you're careful enough and use some lysol, alcohol and gloves you can be sterile enough.

Eh eh eh...

just buy some patience on eBay and either build glovebox or clean your martian spores !

a glove box seems like a good idea but in a sense not the best.

It seems like doing all this in a little box would be difficult.

Especially because my technique which I have had success with is cutting the cakes on a plate and sticking them on the little layer of vermiculate.

The dumb this is I did this all out in the open with just a spritz of lysol now and again, not exactly perfect.

So you can see why I think this is such a good idea.

I need space to move around while i do this, jump, dance, etc HAHA

If you have even a small fan with a hepa filter on it blowing into a big clear garbage bag it won't colapse. Just make sure it's taped around your hands with only a little place for air to escape. This creates a simple positve pressure sterile environment. You don't even have to lysol the bag, cause they're sterile right out of the box.
