MOVE TO OUTLAWMENACE OF KHAT
THE People has won a major victory in our campaign to outlaw a drug as dangerous as crack cocaine.
The Government is to launch an investigation into the effects of deadly khat, which is banned in America and Europe but is legally on sale in Britain.
And the probe could result in the drug - pronounced "cot" - being outlawed by next year.
The move follows a People investigation into khat which is flooding into Britain and is legally on sale for just ?3 a hit.
Smuggling
We revealed how the drug, an African plant favoured by Somalis who chew it to get a kick, triggers paranoia, hallucinations and even mouth cancer.
Doctors fear it can cause depression so severe that a user might attempt suicide.
Gangs based in Britain are making ?150 million a year smuggling it into the US, where it fetches high prices.
The People revealed how a courier flying from London can take enough khat in his luggage to make ?15,000. The profits make it worth risking tough penalties in the US where the authorities treat khat like Class A drugs such as crack.
Now Home Office minister Bob Ainsworth says his department's drugs and alcohol research unit is to carry out an 18-month investigation into khat.
Mr Ainsworth said: "The report will inform future decisions on whether khat should be controlled."
But last night shadow health minister Simon Burns, who backed our campaign, criticised the length of time to reach a decision.
He said: "Given that khat is considered dangerous enough to be classified as a Class A drug in the United States, I am surprised the Government seems to be moving so slowly on it over here."

if it's ?3 a hit in britain, I wonder how much it sells for in the US.
-------------------- One of the reasons marijuana is illegal today because growers in the 30s lobbied against hemp farmers -- they saw it as competition, because It is not chemically addictive as is nicotine, alcohol, or caffeine.

Another meaningless quote... exactly how dangerous is crack cocaine? Is it more or less dangerous than cigerettes.

Doesn't it seem weird how the government can try and tell us what we can and can't do with our own bodies. The time is ripe for a rebellion.
