(Ealier versions were hopefully even better)

Beloved
12 While the king was at his table,
my perfume spread its fragrance.
13 My lover is to me a sachet of myrrh
resting between my breasts.
14 My lover is to me a cluster of henna blossoms
from the vineyards of En Gedi.

Lover
15 How beautiful you are, my darling!
Oh, how beautiful!
Your eyes are doves.

Beloved
16 How handsome you are, my lover!
Oh, how charming!
And our bed is verdant.

Lover

1 How beautiful you are, my darling!
Oh, how beautiful!
Your eyes behind your veil are doves.
Your hair is like a flock of goats
descending from Mount Gilead.
2 Your teeth are like a flock of sheep just shorn,
coming up from the washing.
Each has its twin;
not one of them is alone.
3 Your lips are like a scarlet ribbon;
your mouth is lovely.
Your temples behind your veil
are like the halves of a pomegranate.
4 Your neck is like the tower of David,
built with elegance [1] ;
on it hang a thousand shields,
all of them shields of warriors.
5 Your two breasts are like two fawns,
like twin fawns of a gazelle
that browse among the lilies.
6 Until the day breaks
and the shadows flee,
I will go to the mountain of myrrh
and to the hill of incense.
7 All beautiful you are, my darling;
there is no flaw in you.

5 Your head crowns you like Mount Carmel.
Your hair is like royal tapestry;
the king is held captive by its tresses.
6 How beautiful you are and how pleasing,
O love, with your delights!
7 Your stature is like that of the palm,
and your breasts like clusters of fruit.
8 I said, "I will climb the palm tree;
I will take hold of its fruit."
May your breasts be like the clusters of the vine,
the fragrance of your breath like apples,
9 and your mouth like the best wine.
May the wine go straight to my lover,
flowing gently over lips and teeth. [1]
10 I belong to my lover,
and his desire is for me.
11 Come, my lover, let us go to the countryside,
let us spend the night in the villages. [2]
12 Let us go early to the vineyards
to see if the vines have budded,
if their blossoms have opened,
and if the pomegranates are in bloom-
there I will give you my love.

Any of the four gospels. Revelation is interesting too but certainly should not be taken literally.

Lemme start by saying I consider all holybooks of all religions to be what we Internet people call "Fanfics"

I like the start of Genesis. Not that it's my religion (I'm Wiccan) but that ancient lore about how everything came to be sounds romantic to me. I'd say the start of Genesis, until the first humans started shooting off their yappers.

Hmm, I think I'd choose "The Book of Psalms" because it gives the best insight into the minds of the authors of the Bible, and also because it contains this famous quote from God:

Quote:

I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High.

Of the gospels I think the Gospel of Thomas is the most interesting, but since it isn't a part of the canonical Bible I'd settle for the Gospel of Mark.

C'mon man... just because that one editor back in the day decided that it didn't flow well with the rest of the new testament... aw jeebus!

I like the exodus parts where moses talks about how to treat / punish your slaves.

vengeful, vengeful god.

I second that - The Gospel of Thomas - which is NOT in the Bible, since it was only discovered in 1945 A.D./C.E. I no longer agree with the editors who decided which books should become the canon. They had extreme political agendas for the Roman Catholic Church, and selected Gospel versions that came to depict Jesus as a demigod to be worshipped, not a Teacher to be emulated.

ave markos... hey folks...
just finished reading elaine pagel's _beyond belief_ & highly recommend it to anyone interested in an overview of the development of the canon of christian scripture, and the use of creedal statements to winnow "orthodox" from "heretical" believers during the first few centuries of the common era...

The politics of the initial adoption of Christianity by Constantine et. al is a powerful and brilliant (though incredibly deceptive) example of manipulating the masses.

Bush is a housepest compared to the beasts of that era.

And the situation wasn't much improved 500 years later. Try looking up Pope Stephen VI in a search engine. He dug up the buried corpse of his predecessor (Pope Formosus) and put his decaying corpse on trial for various crimes. The dead pope was found guilty, and as "punishment" three fingers were cut off from the corpse.

With such church leaders, it's a miracle that even a fragment of the original teachings of Jesus have survived.

I say my favorite 'book' of the bible, is probably Maccabees. That's some hard core shit right there man. The invincible Maccabees who with such spiritual strength, crushed the evil tyrant Antiochus (sp.?). That part about the seven brothers and the mother is craaazzy....and inspiring at the same time!

It's part of the apocrypha, not officialized in the Bible.

Well my friend, you beat me to it. I'm LD in computers, so I don't know how to post this other than going to the site, copying the address on paper and typing it in - but if you go to this address, you can listen to a pretty neat lecture by Elaine. She is a really good teacher, humorous at times on this intro to the Gnostic Gospels. http://princeton.edu/almagest/courseware/audio/archives/pagels/elainepagels.html

Seems to me that the truer version of Jesus wasn't even discovered til 1945 C.E. Rather than the Infinite and Eternal Logos of God, clothed in human flesh - a real earthly man nevertheless embodies The Way to BE, and God is Absolute Being.
