High Humidity w/ Casings
    #1633916 - 06/14/03 11:28 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

I know your supposed to lower the humidity when growing casings, but I was wondering if it's a bad idea to keep the humidoty 95% + when growing casings. I've heard about this cob-web stuff that can form, but is it THAT imperitive to lower humidity when growing casings.

Yes, I think it is. IMO, 95% is way too high. The casing itself should provide most of the moisture. Just don't let the casing itself dry out, but that shouldn't happen at 70-80% if you mist it every day.

I agree but I have seen pics of casings and cakes living in unison in the same chamber.

you don't need humidity at all with casings...if you mist your casing a couple times a day it will grow just fine...out in the open

Depends where you live stupaod... If you tried growing Cubensis casings without humidity out in the open in the U.K, you would not be a happy chappy.

no it dosen't depend where you live...they will grow just fine if the casing layer is misted a couple times a day...and yes I have done it and it worked great....and this was when I was still using the furnace in my house so it wasn't humid at all in here

bump... would contams be a big problem if I left a casing out in the open and if so, will misting with a peroxide solution be good to counteract this problem?

If you catch trichoderma because your casings were left out in the open, H2O2 will have relatively no effect against it... :frown:

I use h2o2/h2o for misting my casings always...if mold actually shows up tho your prolly not gonna be able too fight it off with h2o2..but it does do a good job at preventing it

stupaod (or anyone else):

With the 3% H2O2 you purchase at a local grocery store, what is the ratio that you use when misting 'non-contaminated' substances? (Mycelium directly and eventually shroomies themselves?)

I use a 1:10 (1 part 3% H2O2 to 10 parts water) for contams...

I use 1 tablespoon per cup..but I'm sure 1:10 will be fine too

Not that I like to dredge up the past, but casings outside in Britain get a little chilly and don't grow well at all... I hear that the land of the free is a little warmer, but I'm sure there are parts of America that are cold... like Canada or something...

^^^
Is it like....if you have 10 cups of solution, 9 cups is H20 and 1 cup is H202???

I have extra substrate and made a casing in a flower pot, i'm going to put it on a window sill and mist as needed. I was wondering if this would bring about a high risk of contams...
