Hi, I?ve been searching like crazy in the web and have found that this mexican strains like the one I?m growing (The Matias Romero, correct me if I?m wrong) form sclerotia and this might be the reason for all those bumps growing on the cake. If so, could you recommend me a non sclerotia forming strain ? or, Do you know how to make these mexicans to grow just mushrooms ? and, Can I eat the stuff I?m harvesting ?

You got it wrong. When it refers to mexicans, they're are not strains but species. Most known sclerotia forming species are Ps. Mexicana and Ps. Tampanensis.
It's hard to give you a definitive answer, try to get some pics if you can.

I meant the "Matias Romero" strain, or it isn?t a strain of the mexicana psylocibe ?
Thanks man.

The Matias Romero is a Ps. Cubensis strain, i believe it has mexican origin. I know one more mexican cubensis strain which is simply Ps. Cubensis mexican.
Besides this strains you`ll find two native active psilocybe species, Ps. Mexicana A nad Ps. Mexicana B, one of them (i can`t remember which one) is a sclerotia producer. Ps. Mexicana is more difficult to grow because you need to know how to work with grass seeds or grain substrates.

Just a small correction. Ps. Mexicana is one specific specie and it has two strains (A and B). The A strain is the more prolific sclerotia producer.

Finally, I threw them away cause this Sunday, some new ones are going in. I don?t want to risk my new pure non contaminated cakes. Anyway, before I buried them I cut the cake to see what was going on inside. Nothing bad was inside, just white micellium and the rice (of course). All what happened to the cake was just on the surface. And here is my inexperted conclusion: I think that if it was a contam, the inside of the cake should have been contaminated also, considering that the first signs of infection showed a month ago. It had plenty of time to invade the inside and it didn?t. Are all contams fast growers ? Are there contams that only attack the surface of the cake ? Did I threw away healthy shrooms ?
I want to give an advise to first time growers like myself: Buy a good book, buy a digital camera or scanner, get an easy growing P.C. strain and visit the Shroomery with regularity. Most of the information in the internet is like a walt disney story, everything is fine, possitive and great. I have up to 500 pages printed from the internet and non of them helped me with my problem.

Many people told you what it was. You didn't have to throw them away.
But I think that's a good practice to get into.

When it doubt, throw it out

Also you give some good advice. Absorb all the information you can, use the SEARCH function often, don't be afraid to ask questions and pictures help enormously when trying to figure out what things are!

Congrats on not giving up, and I hope you have a great time pursuing this wonderful hobby!
