MycoBag Question
    #1633185 - 06/14/03 03:20 PM (13 years, 11 months ago)

My friend innoculated a few mycobag's 4 days ago. When could he expect to see colonization, and should he keep mixing up the substrate? Is it better to just leave the substrate it a big lump and just wait?

do not keep mixing. mix once when it is first used and then again at 20% colonization and optionally again at 70% colonization.

Hello,
My friend's doing the same thing with Philospher Stones. Here's a excerpt from the grow diary so far. In a 3 day period the bags went from nothing to WHAM!
May 29, 2003
My order arrived after only a week. Come to find out each syringe contains 10ccs so I have twice as many spores as needed. I used 5 ccs in each bag ? had 4 grow bags in all. I modified the instructions and sterilized about everything I touched. Used a lighter on the syringe ends until glowing red and wiped with 91% alcohol. I also shook the syringes for atleast 5 minutes each and between bags.
I?m not sure what they mean by ?smash the bags? but I gently moved the substrate to the upright position so it had plenty of air around them. On at least 2 of the bags the spores seemed to leak outside of the substrate and run down the side of it.

June 1st
Took my first peak at the bags ? no activity yet. A couple were wet so I gave them a shake to distribute the spores evenly.

June 4th
No noticeable change. I have read as the mycelium begins to exchange air the bag will look like its filled with air, hence the reason for having them upright.

June 7th
What a difference the past 3 days have made. All 4 bags are covered with big spots of the white stuff. The white stuff is on the front, where inoculated, and the back side. Please don?t be mold, please don?t be mold?.
They're still growing strong but there's no need to check on them too often.

Thx, my friend has them in a gym bag, so its probably not an ideal container to have them in. He'll probably move them to a box. My question is, is if my friend puts them upright will the shrooms grow all over the mycelium or just the top part of it. *will they grow horizontally?*

The project I was speaking of is a rye substrate for sclerotia loving shrooms. The goal is to grow sclerotia, which take about 2-3 months to mature. Grow bags are ideal for this. Just innoculate and pretty much forget get about it.
Other shrooms I've seen will pretty much grow anywhere out of the mycelium, like any other cakes. You do want to assure that the bags can stand upright. As they start exchanging some air the bags will puff up with air.

When you start inducing light they will grow towards the light.

As I stated earlier my friend innoculated 4 days ago. Since then the bags have been playing horizontally and have been shook up 3 times. The bags didn't poof up probably b/c the reason cyndyl gave, the bags weren't upright. My friend now has them in a cardboard box in a warm and dark enviroment and they are sitting upright. Should they be fine? Have the spores "expired?" Also by spreading out the substrate in the bags to a more flat shape as opposed to a square shape, will this increase yield? I would think that the greater surface area would yield greater possible sites for pins. Anyways, sorry for the newbie questions. This is my friends first time.

No reason to shake 3 times in 4 days; just leave them alone. You may not see colonization for a while.

Flat works but I prefer rough and bumpy, IME.

(i.e. when you break + shake @ 70% colonization, I prefer to leave it this way. More surface area from which to fruit.)

My friends bags have been sitting there for four days with no apparent change in the bags. He put them upright and in a box, think they will be fine? We're kind of worried.

I got a few bags going 5/22 and nothing was happening for a while.  Then on 6/13 I see fluffs of whiteness in each bag.  I mix them up good and let'em be.  I had given up and started jars so I wasn't even expecting anything.  There is alot of substrate in the bags so I know it will take much longer to fully colonize than the jars.  I'm just gonna leave'em be...I got a couple casings and cakes going so there's no rush for me.

Thx to all who replied.  Can't tell you how much it means to a newbie .  I'd like to also thank mycobag's customer service.  Al I think is his name?  He made the whole process of getting my bags really smooth.
