First grow. Golden Teachers. Questions.
    #16331104 - 06/04/12 12:13 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Hi everyone. As the title says I am a first time grower. Actually I have never tripped on shrooms before. I had a bad acid trip (terrible conditions) a couple of years ago and that has been my only experience thus far. Hallucinogens are infinitely interesting to me, however, and I'm very excited about this new venture.

I'm using the Golden Teacher strain. Seemed to be a good first timer strain from my research. I had 8 jars colonizing for roughly 3 weeks and birthed them 3 days ago. Questions following pics:

Are these looking up to par? Are the fuzzy white globs normal? I've been reading about cobweb mold and some of the spiky globs are similar, but not grey. If this is cobweb mold how do I go about nipping the problem in the bud? My humidity has been a tad too high at 99%. I fixed this just a moment ago and will be upping the air exchange.

If this is NOT cobweb.. can I ingest a couple the size of the largest one in the pics and receive any effect? I realize it's somewhat of a waste as they would grow larger, but I'm impatiently excited about experiencing this and would like to have an idea of what to expect when they are 100% ready for harvest.

Thanks in advance guys. This site and the experienced growers' advice has been invaluable. Many props.

This post would do better in the Mush Cult forum, I'm sure a mod can help you move it.

Anyways, as for your questions.  Your fruits look normal.  They need more FAE, but otherwise they're fine.  I would not suggest picking those yet.  Give it a couple of more days.  Those are pins and are not gonna be that potent.  Let the veil tear and then pick them.  You'll be much more pleased with your results if you do this.

What kind of lighting do you got going? You look like you need more light.  You see how the pins all look like they are reaching out and searching for light?  The fuzzy feet are a sign of not enough FAE.  Fan more.  Good luck. :goodluck:

Ahh. My bad. Lesson learned.

Exactly the info I was searching for. Thanks a ton, man.

I have a couple of shitty lights running at the moment. A small 3 bulb LED and one of those push start ones you would stick to a wall. Any suggestions on a better light? I'm not confident with contaminate issues and do not know if I could just leave the lid off for a while next to a closed window to get real sunlight.

Just buy a little desk lamp.  Use a low wattage 5600k CFL bulb.  You can probably get the lamp and bulb for like $7-8 at Walmart.

The chamber is sitting inside a larger black tub (filled with water) with a submersible heater keeping it at 78ish degrees F. This presents a problem as there's not much room in the FC for light fixtures.

I may stop by Lowes and pick up a small sheet of plexi and dremel a window into the lid of the FC for the desk lamp to shine through.

Would keeping the lid off be a better option if I can keep the temp and humidity steady?

You should have just built a SGFC.  Taking the lid off but keeping the humidity up is going to pose a problem.

/sigh

Understood. I'll dremel a window in for this batch and get a SGFC ready for the next batch then I guess. I felt the air pump/water setup was sleeker so I went with it. Haha.

Appreciate the help, sir. To the store I go!

Got it set up last night. I ended up just taking the lid off the small tub and setting the plexi sheet on top of the setup. It looks ghetto, but it'll work for my first attempt. Haha.

There's a small gap from where the air hose lifts the plexi up a tiny bit to one side, but the perlite is damp and the tub is sitting in a few gallons of water so I don't think humidity should be an issue even with the small gap. It's still sitting at 99%.

I've noticed two of the caps have turned black. One of them fell off entirely and the other is just black. I'm pretty sure I have grazed them with my hand while readjusting the cakes from time to time. Is this just bruising or something to worry about? I've read that GTs are notoriously easy to bruise.

Is the cap turning black?  Or is it more blueish? If it's blue, it's bruising.  If it's black, then it's an abort and it wouldn't have grown anymore anyways. But aborts can still be potent, so don't throw them away.

I don't understand why you would go get a sheet of plexiglass and a dremel to add a see through top to your fruiting chamber when it doesn't even need it. Instead you should just put the lid back on the tub filled with perlite and drill 1/4 inch holes every 2 inches all over it and your mushrooms would stop looking so horrible and actually fruit right.

Your hygrometer is probably an inaccurate piece of shit too. Those digital ones aren't designed to go as high as we need to in this hobby and is only a further waste of time and money. Even the analog ones have been ridiculed around here and those are designed to go up much higher than the digital ones.

You got some advice on lighting but it was wrong, the ideal spectrum is 6500k and you should try to get one exactly in that spectrum. I got mine at lowe's for about $7.

It's not too late to turn this grow around but dropping more money into a fruiting chamber that isn't giving you anywhere near the right conditions makes no sense to me when all you have to do is modify it for free if you have a screw gun and a 1/4 inch drill bit.

One final bit of information with mushrooms you don't need or even want your light to be directly above your fruiting chamber. The mushrooms will benefit more from a light that is above and slightly to the side but with your set up you might as well leave the light wherever because it's one of the smallest factors in your grow right now.

VV

EDIT: Your hygrometer is laying ON perlite so of course it's going to read high humidity.

Honestly I can't tell if it's black or blue as it's so small. Could be really dark blue or black. I'm going to pick it just to be safe.

Because I'm learning and will probably make a few more noob mistakes before this is over.

I ordered a kit from Midwest grow kits and was simply using the equipment provided in line with their less than detailed instructions.

How about I just go pick up a new box today and build a proper SGFC to transfer the cakes over to? I was planning on doing so for the next batch anyway and have some free time today.

I'll get an analog one today and keep it off the perlite then if that's what you're suggesting.

Got mine at Lowes as well. 5500k CFL was the closest I could find to what Carnage suggested. The packaging said it simulated natural daylight which I've read was the best thing for shroom cultivating. The only 6000~k ones I saw were the 5" or so long ones that were $25 and up. Price isn't an issue though. Just stating that's all I saw.

Noted.

Any other advice you think would help?

You don't need a new tub for a sgfc just start drilling

That's about it, when you have a properly built SGFC you don't need a hygrometer at all. I have at least 8 cake grows like this under my belt and have to say once you build a proper SGFC you'll wonder why you fooled around with this other stuff at first.

I had two hygrometers in my very first grow. Both of them ended up in the garbage and I have yet to even consider buying a new one considering people have spent upwards of $30 on a small analog hygrometer designed for cigar humidors but as I've mentioned already it's sooooo hard to find a good hygrometer for this hobby so I'd just ignore it completely and focus on building that SGFC asap.

1/4 inch holes spaced every two inches on all sides including bottom and lid then 3-4 inches of perlite in the bottom and then your mushrooms will turn out like this instead.

Just keep us posted man it sucks to see people struggle with grows because they didn't know about how willing people are around here to help you out and ensure that you have great grows. Feel free to PM me anytime and I'll respond to you within 12 hours to help you out with whatever you've got going on.

Be sure to post up some pictures later on if you build the SGFC which I really hope you do.

Excellent. Headed out in just a bit then to browse for the best looking SGFC. Need to pick up a new drill bit too. Can't find my 1/4th.

I can guarantee I'll buy a new hygro anyways. Haha. I like to keep records of everything for reference even if it's trivial data. You never know!

About the bulbs.. What's the reason behind a 6500k instead of a daylight simulating one? So far the only info I've come across regarding the lighting has been that it's not very important. It's only to signal the proper time for growth to begin. Does the particular spectrum benefit the grow somehow?

I'll definitely post some pics once I get it set up later today. Thanks so much. Forums like this are notorious for elitist assholes and you guys have been fantastic so far.

P.S. Those shrooms are beautiful.

ETA: How do I go about regulating the temp in the SGFC? The submerged heater and water are keeping the current one at proper temp. My roommate demands the house be kept at 68-69 degrees or she can't sleep. Lol.

6500k is the absolute ideal light source. Yours isn't going to hurt anything since it's still in the daylight spectrum. Once you get into the warm spectrum which is the typical bulbs in homes it becomes way less beneficial.

It's a known fact though that mycelium benefits from circadian rhythm (12/12 lighting schedule) both during colonization as well as during fruiting. I've noticed in previous grows that this absolutely contributed to fast colonization times.

I use a timer on my light so that I can always keep it exactly the same throughout the entire process from start to harvest.

Ooh! That makes sense. Looks like this plug timer will actually come in handy then. One came with the Midwest kit for the crappy little airpump. It said to run it 30-60 minutes twice a day, but even running it 24/7 doesn't provide enough FAE.

I'm thinking about growing some golden teachers. This would be my first time growing them. I just need to know what I would need to start this, every detail.
