Pretty little Hygrocybe
    #16328985 - 06/03/12 10:41 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

Found this little Hygrocybe spp. (I believe) the other day.  Growing on a small deciduous stump in a largely deciduous forest.  The largest cap shown here is roughly 1 cm wide, with more mature ones roughly 4 cm.  A spore print was not obtained, and no bruising was observed from handling.  The stem (not easily visible here) was the same color as the cap at the point where it met the gills, and darkening to black towards the ground.

In the upper left of the image you can see another, out-of-focus, more mature specimen.  The cap is slightly darker on the more mature ones.

Ahhh, okay. I was trying to find a genus description of whether or not all Hygrocybes are terrestrial for this very reason.
