What edible mushrooms grow directly in a rye bag?
    #16327496 -

Is there a complete list of edible and medicinal mushrooms that specifically grow well within a rye berry spawn / grow bag?

There are some species that will fruit directly off grain.
I have seen Lion's mane, reishi, and oysters do this.
It is more effective to spawn to bulk substrates though.

I had a Shiitake fruit sporadically for six months from a rye bag.

I've had Lion's Mane, Reishi, and Shiitake fruit directly off grain.
They all performed differently and I wouldn't say any of them grew well.
My King Oyster strain has never fruited on grain.

The Lion's Mane completely filled the top of the bag with fruit bodies,
but they were very light and low quality.

After many months the Shiitake fruited prolifically, everywhere.
Maybe if you removed it from the bag and placed it in proper fruiting conditions
it would yield, but then you might as well make proper sawdust blocks.

Reishi was the only one that I would do again. The fruiting bodies weren't very impressive,
but almost the entire block had been converted to mycelium. Most of the grains were completely
consumed with only a hollow hull remaining. The Reishi was grow on white sorghum, here are some pictures:
