McCloud Porcini Festival * 6
    #16292050 - 05/27/12 11:48 AM (11 years, 8 months ago)

Yesterday me and a handful of Shroomery people walked over 8 miles, scouring the forest for raised pine needle/duff litter.  We found SO many boletes.  My arms got tired from carrying them.  The festival was fun and the porcini sausage sandwich (plus candy cap iced tea) were delicious.  Back at camp we slaved over several hot stoves sauteeing up sliced bolete and rarely getting the stack very high on the plate before it disappeared.

I met lots of nice people, some of whom even gave me wine.

I learned that boletes can even be cooked on a stick over the campfire, like marshmallows.

We saw some bitter boletes and it's amazing how blue they get, INSTANTLY.

Bolete hunting was spectacular.  Morels, not so much, though one of our own Shroomites found a lovely one that hopefully won the prize at the festival for sweetest morel.

Alan planned to hunt a little higher in elevation today and hopefully find more morels.  However, due to the fact I wake around 6:00 a.m., a quirk unlikely to endear me to fellow campers, I slunk out early with minimal noise and made for home, which is ridiculously close for me.

Thank you to everyone for a great day.

Here is some of Saturday's eye candy!

It was the first time I'd ever tasted COOKED boletes....only had them dried before.  I was stoked!  I donated my huge ones to the group effort and brought home the mediums.  Just sauteed some for my daughter, who usually refuses mushrooms, and she and her friend loved them.

Along with copious amounts of boletes we found lots of other interesting fungi, which are pictured above.  The amanita was such a beautiful find (the very first thing I found); Alan found a toothed fungus and some other interesting ones like the poisonous blue-stemmed one above...it's great to hunt with him since he can rattle off the name of every single mushroom without pausing.

Hi Michelle!  It was so good to meet, and hunt with you.

I wish I could have camped with the group, but work called, and like you I'm ridiculously close to McCloud so I had no excuse for missing it.

I recognize a lot of those mushrooms!  And several of the hands and tee shirts, too.

Hopefully we'll all be back next season.  Hope they found more morels today.

I'll try to get some of my photos of the gathering up in the next day or so.  I just may drive out to McCloud and try to find the group.

I'll be in the area for a few more days / weeks...

Michelle, great to meet and hunt with you.

I have the same quirky affliction and here I was thinking I was disturbing you while you tried to sleep in your truck.
Went for an early walk and you were gone when I returned.  Sorry you left so soon.

To be honest that was the best hunting day (by weight) but we had a great time afterwards too, went up to the snow line in search for morels, such a beautiful place to be and great company too.  Looking forward to next year.

Love the photos, thanks for sharing.

Hey!  I heard you up rattling around the fire a little after 6:00 a.m.  I was awake, hoping fervently that someone else would get up and some coffee would magically appear.  But alas.. The market in McCloud had some excellent cappuccino for the ride home.  I'll pack better next time.

It surely was a great hunt.  I just got done drying a whole bunch of sliced Boletes in the dehydrator.  I still had a huge bag even after donating my nicest ones to the cookout.

I would be totally up for any area shroom hunting..  Maybe this fall.

I thought you had that contest in the bag.  I heard that the winner brought in two morels, one at 0.4 pounds and one at 0.6 pounds!!

I wish I could have hung around/camped with the group.  I would have like to have brought you all to some decent morel spots.

Heading out this afternoon to gather another batch of Porcini!

You left too early!  Coffee did appear.  We brought our french press and I was planning on making you a cup for driving us around all day ;-)

Aww!  Sorry to have missed that!  Hey, PM me if you don't mind...much as I'd love to keep your girlfriend's copy of "Mushrooms Demystified," I wouldn't feel good about it!!  I found it in the floorboard of my truck and figured it's either hers of yours.  You guys were so cool...I hope you can come next year too.  I wish we had a fall gathering!

Michelle! Such GREAT photos! Thanks for posting them. It's me -- b4rk0d3's red-haired gal! We enjoyed hunting and cooking with you and everyone at the camp. Can't wait for the next one!

I'm late on this, I know. I only signed up 2 months ago and can't visit the Porcini Hunting in Mt. Shasta thread because it's restricted to n00bz. :frown: If anyone has pics of me and b4rk0d3 from this hunt, please PM me! Thx!
