How to Use A Gravity Bong with a Torch Lighter?

I've been trying to light it holding the flame straight down over the dish, with the flame well other an inch away, whilst using 30mgs of DMT or more, sometimes to great effect, and sometimes not, which is why I'm here.
You're only supposed to char the parsley, if you're using parsley, for instance; I think I'm heating well past char, and I'm using a very potent torch, let's just say. So, in any event, the parsley leaves should be black, but still recognizable, yes? Or, should they go from green, to gray?
Also, even as I keep my flame well above the dish, an orangish beam descends down from the flame to the bowl; it's pretty to watch, to say nothing about fascination, but is this supposed to happen?
My guess is I'm burnin' up an awful lot of spice, because I hear 30mgs is plenty, and on a good toke it's impressive, but I hear that it can be mind-blowing.
Oh, and my lighter's great, but if I drop it, I may burn the house down because it lacks a safety switch. Any sugestions?

Use the torch to light a small piece of paper on fire, use the normal fire to light the bowl.
Toothpics work well too.

Buy a normal lighter. They only cost a dollar or so.

Very useful info, both youse...but a "normal" lighter? You mean a flint, Bic gas-type lighter, or do small, propane hand-held torch lighters count?

A 'Normal' lighter would be your standard bic.
Zippos are awkward for smoking, taste like lighter fluid.
Torches are ok if you don't mind burning up half your substance instead of vaporizing it.

I'm starting to realize that about torches, most definitely; they burn hot.
