learning experience.

My buddy's first grow was about 20 jars. He followed the MMGG, sterilizing for 4 hours. The contam rate was very low but I think that some of the jars dried out because of over cooking and possibly incorrect substrate ratio. He recently tried 50 jars and over 12 already contaminated. The vermiculite he got was corse so he ground it up in his hands before mixing it up. this made them smaller but fear this could have added to the contamination. also he followed the pf- tek instead which said to sterilize for only an hour. was this the problem. Also does the water in the sterilizing pot need to be sterile and can the jars be stacked 4 or more in the pot. He will be trying again soon and calling this a learning experience. IT looks like he will only have one successful jar. I was expecting the PF tek to make a big difference but somehow the contams got in there. Even the jars displaying no growth stink so he thinks there was something pretty nasty in there. He left 20 jars in there with no growth since it's been a week and a half and there might be some chance. The jars that showed contamination we disposed of. The incubator now smells bad as well when it's cracked. Kind of like vinegar. Does this pose a threat to the one good jar.?

Dude... i would just try to find a pressure cooker....
You used steam sterilization right?
ASK all your buddies if their parents have one u can use for a bit.
I am still looking to find one for me to use after myne got jacked....
Look at second hand stores for one.
I beileve at Walmapart you can buy a small one for less than 20 bucks but it will only fit three jars in it at a time.....
Maybe u can buy it.... use it... and take it back after u r done.
I dont know man.. but whatever u do.. goodluck..
P.s> i dont think that the water in the pressure cooker or pot has to be sterilized... i never used sterilized water or anything special and i never had contams.
Goodluck BRO

wow.... start smaller!!! like 6 jars. and do it right!!! by the book!!!

too many jars = too many chances to fuck it up.. possible causes of failure!

wipe your needle between each innoculation with alc.. or flame it!

verm size don't matter that much..

water in the pot can be taked from the tap.. no biggie!

4 hrs is too much.. 1.5 is plenty!

Read some more!

everything in there, including the water, becomes sterilized if done at the right temperature and duration

I always see Pressure cookers at Goodwill, St. Vincents, or whatever church run thrift store you have in your local area. Remember to think like the store's target audience and follow the little old women around. They'll lead you to stuff like that and the other bargains the place has to offer. I once found a small 400 watt grow lamp in there for $50!!! Some grandma had passed away and had been an avid gardner. Her husband just donated it.
