soaking millet

im soaking millet right now...but i dont have 12 or so hours.....does it really matter how long you soak it???

friend soaked his for 1 hour, then rinsed real well, then made jars and they're cased ready to pin now. just be sure to get it out before it starts germinating itself and rinse it well.

ok, thanks...i was thinking for soaking for about 2 hours.....need to get done with innoculation by 5 today.....

The warmer the water, the shorter the time needed. At the boiling point only 25-30 minutes are needed. If the water has only 60?F then 24 hours is probably not long enough.

This is probably the cause of the popping you described earlyer.. dry grain!!!

the tek i got tells me to soak and rinse...so i did....

but it also said let dry real good......i didnt do that part...i put hair dryer in the bowl and put towel over it for about 5 min and soaked up rest of the water with paper towels............

the draining is very very important...
ya screw this up and u end up with too much moisture...
too much moisture = bacteria contam (well in my expirence anyways..)

use hot water from the tap. as hot as it will go.. submerge the grain and stir it up every 1/2 hour.. you should be able to get away with it after at least 4 hours.. more is better.. overnight is perfect!

then load bags as above, let drain until it does not drip anymore. then soak up excess water from the bottom of the bag with towels and bingo!
