gene pools and strain degredation
    #1630225 - 06/13/03 01:06 AM (14 years, 3 months ago)

on the hawks eye website it says that their strains are always in their prime and don't degrade because they maintain a wide gene pool. i haven't ordered through them before. a friend o mine recently got some syringes from a different, equally reputable vendor that seemed to be in a rather degenerate state. the PR yeilded well, but threw out almost exclusively fat abhorts. the Cam yeilded poorly and the fruits never fully matured (caps did not open, no spores). so my question is how, exactly, does one ensure that one's strains do not degenerate?

are you talking about a casing???

PR's tend to do this on casings with a large pinset on the first flush. They're usually better on the second time around if you take care of it. Don't know what went wrong with the Cambodians; could have been a number of things, or just a wierd substrain. I'd need more details or a picture.

Strain degredation refers more to cloning mycelium for multiple generations, not starting with spores. Spores have different genetics from one another which allows for a dominant strain to take over, but sometimes certain substrains can just be wierd.

Could be outside factors, though, such as too little water (or too little casing,) too much CO2, substrate lacking in nutrition, some chemical inhibiting its fruiting (i.e. magnesium in the lime,) contamination, etc, etc.

the PR was an uncased mixture of straw/wormcastings. the yeild was quite satisfactory, it just wasn't easy finding good candidates for prints. there was indeed a large pinset, however it was the first flush that produced the most "normal" fruit bodies, the subsequent flushes have been almost exclusively abhorts. my 3rd grade principal has grown PR before, but it was under much drier conditions, most likely the source of the discrepency. as far as the cam's go, my grandma grew them on multiple substrates, with and without casings, and with varying amounts of moisture, all resulting in few fruits with a high abhort rate and even the ones that get big stop maturing around when the veil begins to stretch. a few have opened to reveal sterile gills, not unlike the degenerated PF strain. i've already procured a new cam print; i imagine this is a substrain issue like micro suggested. my uncle weiney will have to tell me how they turn out.

Thanx for good input!!
