Jar Sizes
    #1629558 - 06/12/03 08:04 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

I'm sorry to ask this but...
I'm from Canada so we don't really use quarts and pints. How big is a quart sized jar? Is that like a mayonase jar? What about a pint size? Is that like the size of a jam jar? It's smaller than the quart right? How big exactly? Which should I use?
Thank you!

Ok, so those will work?
I just don't want to be using really small jars when the intructions call for larger ones.

Don't try to pressure cook empty mayonaise and jelly jars. It can be dangerous. They weren't designed for canning and the heat may cause them to crack.

Alright.
What is the difference between a quart and a half pint?

A quart jar is something like a 236 ML jar. (My canadian tires masson jars are more like 250 ML but it's quite the same)

pint jars are about 500ml and 1\2 pints are..well 1\2 of that the 1\2 pint or 250ml jars are the ones you want...short and wide(wide mouth) are preferable(colonize faster) but the regular one will work too. FYI a quart is a little less than a liter=1000ml these are good for innoculating grain since you only fill them 1\2 way and shake them. But for BRF&Verm. 250ml are the way to go

Yeah quarts might be too much. I suggest the PF tek using half pints (250 ml) and brown rice flower with vermiculite. Almost fool proof and very easy.

Here is a visual for you. A 12oz can of soda is 355ml. I believe you folks in Canada call it pop.

even pints take too long...i'd rather do twice as many 1\2 pints to get the same amount in 1\2 the time

Does the size really matter? It won't change much if you use a smaller jar will it? I mean, the amount produced will be be less of course, but will it affect the success of the shrooms?

Big jars take forever to colonize and unless you want to wait till the end of the summer to see fruit go smaller 250ml. So the ultimate outcome is the same smaller is fasterand mo better right? you'll be just as successful with smaller actually more so since you'll be eating sooner

Speaking of time...
If I were to start the process this weekend (ie, tomorrow) how long would I expect to wait until fruiting?

Well, I'm talking about from from innoculation of rice cakes. The very beginning. What kind of time frame am I looking at? I am curious because I will be leaving town in early August. Would this work out? Or should I just forget about it?

about 3-4 weeks for cakes (poor yield)
4-5 for casing (better yield)
about 5-7 weeks for spawned poo thats cased (best yield)worth the extra effort
These are estimates based on incubating at 82-86 deg F or25-30deg cel.I wouldn't wait. i'd go for it at least you have time for cakes you get some fruits and take a print or two before you go so you can innoculate more jars before you go then try casing when you get back. Then on to spawning poo...that sounds like a productive use of time too me.
