Coprinus lagopus?
    #1627549 - 06/11/03 09:34 PM (20 years, 10 months ago)

I found these buggers growing in my N.tabacum pot.

Some of the soil was mixed with mulch from my garden.
They grow very fast. They pop up and in 2 days they are dead.

They have no recognizable odor.
Hollow stem, free gills, and they have a furry stem and cap.
Im just curious to know what there may be.
Spore print is black, close gills.

Thanks in advance.

I think what you've got is close to Coprinus hiascens. Unfortunately, to be sure of exactly which Coprinus, we need to do a bunch of microscope work.

Happy mushrooming!

under C. lagopus several other similar Coprinus species that "are one big headache for compulsive Coprinus-categorizers" in Mushrooms Demystified. 2 other possibilities are C. tectisporus "which grows in greenhouse soil and only partially deliquesces" and perhaps C. narcoticus which "grows in manure and rich soil and has a strong, unpleasant odor."

the description matches C. lagopus except for the habitat which is leaf litter, woody debris, and burned areas. because of this i would have to go with Coprinus tectisporus. to confirm this, the spores would have to be looke at under a microscope....

tadah

It was on wood debris. you cant tell but around the center of that pot is mulch.
