Privacy advocates say all kinds of things. Hysteria is everywhere, you need to stop and take stock of what the actual situation is. There's a guy in another thread worried that we're all going to die from radiation poisoning. He's as sincerely concerned as you are, and his sources sound just as sincere as what you quote. But both fears are overblown.
Police already can use surveillance drones. This is about commercial application. Also, police are free to take pictures of you using a kite with a camera, or a model rocket with one.

sure police can take pictures of u from the road, but were talking about basically, installing a security camera over every home....eventually. And if u don't see that as a privacy concern, then you obviously don't care about privacy at all which voids your opinion on such matters.

Perhaps you need to speak directly to the right LEO. If you did, you would ALSO learn that they already are testing and using microphone-enabled cross-walk signs and lamp posts to listen in on conversations of American citizens!!!
This is NOT a joke. Its already being done. So, they can SEE you and HEAR you, any time they want - and its all legal. The "expectation of privacy" is only while you are within your home, according to the Supreme Court. How fucked is THAT??????????????
If that doesn't enrage you, I have no idea what would.

I don't see how drones are different than manned aircraft spying on people, something that police have been doing for years. Spying on people via aircraft should be legal - the alternative is to make it illegal to take pictures from an aircraft.
Regarding crosswalk signs, there are no laws against recording what goes on in public, nor should there be.

Police in major cities and authorities elsewhere already fly unmanned surveillance pretty regularly.
What would be the purpose of commercial drones? Testing of drone technology for sale to governments? Flying people's pets around? Cargo? I don't get what the need for commercial drones is...

America - known for privacy violations and capitalistic control.
American people - think they get supplied their candy for the sheer sweetness factor of it all. not because they need to be convinced to play nice while big business and the government institutions control them.
Spying - NORMAL, NO QUESTION ABOUT IT; MOVE ALONG

I think you are failing to see the big picture here. Its not just these two issues. Its apart of a growing police state problem.
