The Caraka Samhita (or Charaka) is the most important oldest text of 'Ayurveda', the Indian system of medicine, and one of the oldest comprehensive medical texts. It contains not only recipes for herb-based drugs but also cosmology and a theory as to how one can live in the most healthy possible. I have started reading it and I find it interesting, at times baffling, at times useful, at times incomprehensible or doubtful. It is very useful to read to see a very different way of looking at medicine than we do today, since medicine in Ayurveda is about achieving a positive alignment of the spirit and body.

I am reading a complete volume of the texts starting at one, which begins with a cosmological story of how the authors arrived at the information in the text (meditation, communication with gods and then passing it down to successive sages). Book 1 will be required to understand the theory. But if it is of any interest at all you might check out this archive of chapter 6 online, here, which contains a number of recipes including specific quantities of herbal ingredients. Try at your own risk of course - I nor anyone else could guarantee that they're safe. But a number of the herbs discussed are still used widely today.

If you don't add parsley, I'm afraid I can't meet you at Scarborough fair.
