Agaricus augustus in Seattle (no pics)
    #1627023 - 06/11/03 07:42 PM (13 years, 11 months ago)

I came across quite a nice patch of these most excellent mushrooms here in Seattle on Monday on my way home from finals.  I was pretty sure of the ID but I know Agaricus is a tough genus so I took them in to the mycology dept. at my school today to verify it, and sure enough it was them.  The hot weather last week made em pop I guess.  It's amazing how huge they are with the little rain we've been getting.  Caps about the size of a CD and really meaty.  The smell is insane!!  Really sweet/almondy.  Anyway, no mature specimens were found, and many new ones have come up in the past couple days.  The head of the mycology dept. says that this is the time for them to be around, so I thought I'd let all the inclined seattleites know to keep their eyes open.  There are good things to be found in the summertime too  .

Sounds like a good find.  Thanks for the info, have you tried these before?
I just had my last two finals today also.  It's a nice feeling having them over.  I can finally get some sleep later, I've been up for 33 hours now and for some reason don't feel tired at all.  I'm supposed to go drinking with some friends later though, I'm sure that will put me in a nice coma

@cro: I fried some up for lunch, they were pretty good like that, but I think they'd be better in a sauce or something.  I'm grilling one whole cap like a portabello right now to try it that way.

MagmaManiac: They're Agaricus augustus, I had them identified at the mycology dept. of my college.  The description and pics of the species are here: http://www.mykoweb.com/CAF/species/Agaricus_augustus.html
I don't have access to a digital camera, sorry :frown: , it's on my list though  ...

Not my pic, but a good one...

Great find. Those are one of the best edibles around (I think).

Happy mushrooming!

What kind of habitat did you find those in?  The link said they would be around/under pine trees or that environment but that pic looks more like an open grassy area.  Thanks - @cro

Edit: Alright I've been drinking a bit  I guess that's not your pic but I'm still curious as to the environment. @cro

@cro: They were found around a pine tree, new mulch was laid around it a few months ago on top of some old decomposed mulch and they're pushing up through it. I assume they're growing on the old, decomposed stuff.

mj: I go to school at the UW.

Have you or anyone else seen those around the seattle area within the last week? Today is June 23. Dont cook them in sauce you will destroy the flavor saute in butter. If I were you I would clone them. Dont let the caps open. The cluster formation makes them ideal for cloning and I suspect likely to fruit invitro. Workman had a picture (Possably fake Universtiy of San Francisco not his) of the cultivated Prince. Seems cultivators will not colaborate on this one for good $ reason. In my experience they like to grow out of roots along paths although unlikely to be mycorizzhal) under douglas fir and western red cedar in the grass or pine needles any other experiences on massive fruiting location and photos would be interesting to see read or think about.
