I'd want pics before I'd agree you have cougars. Just seems unlikely, like people saying we have grizzly bears here. But your bears are black bears for sure. Think they are transients? Or re-colonizing lost ground? Is there a state-law reason why 'there are no bears', as alleged re: cougars?

cougar tracks are pretty unmistakable proof and bobcats dont sound anything like a cougar
this one was shot about 80 miles south of me in west point, they guy wasnt prosecuted, maybe because there's no cougar in georgia

Erm... I was replying to Pris. You can tell from the title bar of my post, where it says "re: Pris"
Michigan, sure you have cougars. Ever seen one? We have them here apparently, but I've never seen any trace, no tracks, no scat, no nothing. I believe they are here but I scoff at most claimed sightings.
Pris, that looks cougary, but was there a real ID made? Or did everybody just close their eyes and hope the carcass would go away?

I rarely watch linked vids of any sort. But I'm looking again at the cougar in the truck. Does it seem really kind of small and skinny? I wonder if that's a yearling that got lost somehow and ended up digging through trash or eating tied-up dogs?

DNR claims that it was probably someone's pet cougar that escaped

That's not completely unlikely.
There probably are more captive/farmed cougars in your state than wild ones. So if one got out, it would end up hungry and hunting around people. Whereas a wild one would be pretty wary.

I know for a fact that there are cougars/mountain lions in upstate NY. I went camping with a buddy and his family near Callicoon, NY. I saw several distinct mountain lion tracks in river beds while hiking. One night we were stoned as fuck, just finished smoking a blunt on the dock of the lake and we heard the tale-tell sound of a mountain lion. We made a crazy stoned dash into the cabin. They're there for sure.
Also, I used to service some redneck barbershop's fish tank in a town in north Jersey that bordered NY state and they told me all about how buddies of theirs had shot two mountain lions the week before, showed me pics too.
They are 110% in NY State.

if one escaped from captivity it would quickly be reported to DNR,
the odds of several escaping per year would be astronomical. I'm trying to find the article of the one spotted outside of atlanta a few years ago
http://www.chattanoogan.com/2008/11/18/139225/Hunter-Kills-Cougar-in-Georgia.aspx
Quote:
Hunters around Georgia's West Point Lake might be led to believe that Georgia has a new predator roaming the woods - the cougar.
A Sunday kill of a male cougar on U.S. Army Corps of Engineer land at West Point Lake, south of Hwy. 109 seemed to verify that thought. However, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Resources Division, this simply is a one-time experience.
"TThough cougar and panther sightings persist in Georgia, there are no known native populations of these animals roaming the woods," advises Wildlife Resources Division Region Supervisor Kevin Kramer. "There is no reason to believe there are any more cougars out there. This likely is a unique experience and while exciting, is not something for which we should be concerned."
he cougar, taken near the Abbottsford community west of LaGrange, was a male, 88 inches in length measured from the nose to the tip of the tail and weighed approximately 140 pounds. The hunter who took the animal was legally hunting deer from his tree stand at the time the cougar approached.
Initial external examination by Wildlife Resources Division biologists found no tattoos, tags or collars, and the cougar had not been declawed.
Further examination by The Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study in Athens Monday afternoon confirmed the cougar to be healthy and well fed. Researchers determined the cougar had a very low parasite level and that the pads on all four feet were scuffed. According to SCWDS staff, these findings are consistent with a captive reared cougar, not a wild specimen.
Due to the fact that there are no known native populations of cougars in Georgia, no permitted cougars in this area and that the closest Alabama facilities permitted to house cougars (in Elmore and Macon Counties) have accounted for all permitted cougars, the animal taken Sunday likely escaped or was released from a non-permitted individual.
There currently are no leads as to who may have most recently held the animal, but the Division will continue to look into all possibilities.

there are no permits for cougar in georgia except to places like zoos, alabama acknowledges that cougar are native to the region and there's been hundreds of reported sightings and fuckloads of historical records including in DeKalb county alabama which is the next county over from me, now do you believe that the cougars know where the state line is and one once in a while they disregard georgia's claim and cross that state line? could it be possible that GADNR is just making the claim as was mentioned by joe so they dont have to deal with the federal headaches
