First Hunt... First Find... : D
    #1625570 - 06/11/03 04:05 AM (13 years, 5 months ago)

This is my first hunt ....
so let me know if I left any thing out on the identification part..

This specimen was found on the southern side of California.... : )

it was growing on the ground in the grass in a small park on the lawn....
not a heavily traveled or played on park...
it's left alone for the most part....

this specimen was kind of yellowish light brown....
it bruised very yellow
the gills where light tan or light yellowish tan and so where the spores when I looked underneath..

the stem was a little fuzzy but very stringy and it broke up stringy when I pressed it hard
also the stem was yellow I could tell that for sure
but it changed to a kind of light tan tords the cap

Now the cap was dome shaped and it had a very light ring around the outer part of the cap.....
the color was light tanish yellow with a darker spot of tan in the center of the cap....

do you guys know what it's name is....?
also it's common name to please...

thanks for the help.... : )

TWR......

all you have to do is highlight the text, it will turn black on a white background.

when i look at it, perhaps a Conocybe.

did you take a spore print, because you said when you looked at something. put the mushrooms gills down on a piece of paper, sprinkle some drops of water on top and cover it with a cup or bowl. leave it for an hour or two and come back to see what color spores dropped on the paper.

overall good pics and a good description. please get that spore prints so we can do something more.

It is a Conocybe and is not psuychoactie. Avoid this species . They are in the PNW with both psychoactive species (2) and one deadly poiisonous species.

The concensus seems to be it's a Conocybe. Without a microscope we're not likely to identify it to species in that genus.

It's not an active species, and none of the mushrooms in Conocybe should be eaten. There are definitely known to be species of Conocybe with deadly poisons in them.

You should also know that most of the common names in books like the Audubon Society Field Guide were made up by Lincoff or others, and they are generally not useful (some book editors want common names so the authors give in). If you want a common name, go ahead and make one up that will remind you of this mushroom. If it's a common mushroom and you make up a good name, maybe your friends will start using it and it'll become a semi-official common name.

Happy mushrooming!

how do you differentiate between Conocybe and Bolbitius?

Bolbitius have slimy (viscid) caps and Conocybe will have dry caps.

Since he didn't mention slimy, they're probably dry.

Happy mushrooming!
