Are These Black Morels?
    #16237219 - 05/15/12 08:59 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

Are these black morels?  They were found near a creek in New York.  They also have hollow stems.  Quite possibly I'm thinking these are the toxic shrooms that closely resemble morels.  What are you're thoughts?:sun:

The cap seems to be fused to the stalk at the base so I'm gonna say they look like morels to me. Just a little on the old side.

I will confess something that should be quite obvious, CC.  I love mushrooms, i.e. fungi.  I really do.  I am talking about a strong feeling, i.e. emotion, for them.  I think they are beautiful.  I even dream of them.

if these mushrooms are really black morels I'm going to be stoked!  I'll start eating them with pasta. but I need to be positive they are indeed morels.

Pine needles everywhere! Morel habitats are a little confusing.

no bugs in them.  however I came close to being bit by a mosquito while taking the picture.  So are morels hollow??

Yes. In fact- if it isn't hollow, it probably isn't a Morel.

Yes, that is a true morel. Take some time to read about them here;

http://www.mushroomexpert.com/morchella_black.html

and learn exactly what you need to look for to make a positive ID. When I want to eat a wild mushroom I like to learn about any poisonous lookalikes as well. In this case you may want to learn a little about the false morels as well so that you can tell the difference easily in the future.

Congrats on the find, hope you enjoy them!

That's what most golden morels start to look like with a bit of age.
Not really in the greatest condition to enjoy in my opinion.
