Eating rotted mushrooms
    #1623051 - 06/10/03 04:01 AM (20 years, 9 months ago)

Today I found a good bit of mushrooms along with some rotted ones. Some of them stunk and were practically goo (I threw most of these out). While others had maggots and browness inside them. I read that rotted mushrooms can make you sick. How would you go about deciding if the mushrooms are fit to eat or not?

peace

dobie has the right idea.

Ask yourself if you'd buy those mushrooms if they were for sale at the grocery store. If they were just something to eat and were sitting in your refrigerator, would you eat them if they were like that?

Eating rotting food is a common cause of food poisoning. You can become very ill from food poisoning, or even die. According to the Centers for Disease Control, about 5000 people a year die of food poisoning in the US every year. Don't risk it.

Happy mushrooming!

smell them. do they smell like the non-rotten ones?

are there just parasites in them or are they rotten too? this is much easier to find out in white fleshed mushrooms, but if you cut in half you can usually tell.

personally, i would not eat them if they had a lot of maggots in them. i suggest the same thing, eat them only if there are only a few maggots in them and they are not rotten.

When it comes to getting high humans have the uncanny ability to eat an assortment of insects, maggots ect and dont care if shit is rotten and unsavory...There are isolated incidents when people were so happy with their finds that they jump head first into a wormy maggot infested shrooms...I wont eat a fresh shroom at all and cannot believe that i used to chog-chomp freshies and chase em down with chocolate milk gagging the whole time. Mine have to be dryed properly and mixed with the appropriate amount of juices...Gone are the days of chile chomping those gross ass shrooms straight from the fields still warm ugckkk...Your thoughts MJ?

I think alot of you guys have probably eaten bug and/or maggots before without realizing it. It's kind of hard to say that "if it was food would you eat it?" because it's not food, it's a drug and people will still ingest nasty specimens. I'm with TxTec on this one, I only eat wild shrooms after they've been dried too. Something just more comforting about them.

If you've ever eaten wild mushrooms you're almost certain to have eaten a few maggots. Eating a few isn't an issue.

You mentioned that some had "browness inside them". If there are a lot of maggots, then a significant part of that browness is maggot shit. Eating maggot shit sounds nasty by itself, but the real concern is the bacteria which have a good possibility of growing in that shit.

When I suggest you evaluate them as if they were food, I'm not saying they're food. I'm just saying that you should use the same criteria you would use to decide whether you'd eat them if they were food. If you followed the link I posted you'd see that, in the US every year, food poisoning causes 76,000,000 illnesses and 325,000 hospitalizations. If those mushrooms have rotted then you are risking being a part of those statistics.

If you'd eat regular mushrooms in the condition these are in, then you can probably wash 'em off and be OK. If not, then they should be tossed, just like you'd do with any food item in a similar state.

I'm not telling you to throw them out. I'm suggesting you use the same criteria you use every day to decide what to eat, and judge them accordingly.

Good luck and happy mushrooming!
