Using a sterile wrap as a bio-barrier
    #1624563 - 06/10/03 09:38 PM (14 years, 2 months ago)

Hey again,
Just a thought here that came to me while I was at work the other day. In the OR we use 3M One-Step Sterile Wrap for our instruments. We wrap specific instruments in them and sterilize them in the paper. This wrap is 2 layers of a polypropelene sort of synthetic (therefore, not a 'paper' at all). This is how materials are autoclaved (how many times I dream of using our autoclaves for my litttle project!). This materia allows water VAPOR to penetrate, but not biological entities. They calculated that the odds of some such entity (infection) penetrating both layers of the paper were one to a few billion. Now, if I were to cut these into the size of the mouth of a half-pint Mason jar and place them in a PF style jar with a dry vermiculite layer (between the dry verm and the lid of the mason jar), I think it would lower contams. The steam would be allowed to penetrate and sterilize the substrate. Then, I would put 4 holes in it with my syringe (inoculation). This paper "seals' back up tho, so I think those holes would be almost a non-issue. What are your thoughts on this? I'm definatly gonna experiment with it. Anyone ever try anything like this before?

Peace!

Your idea sounds good. As long as there's air circulation possible it will work.

Great, I think that having the paper loosely placed on top of the dry verm will still allow sufficient circulation. thanks!

It should work! You can try to use it in a similar way as Tyvek & other filter discs material. Look at the experiment Anno made with Tyvek:

Excellent link zeronio.. I was wondering if I should make them into squares that can fit over the sides of the jars, or just circles that fit inside the jar? I'm going to have to experiment some, I think. Any ideas/suggestions?
