A decent but late weilii find(pics)

I was a bit late on this patch, I've been too busy to get out and check anything this past week. They were really not in all that bad of condition. The pic of them on my table is after they had sun dried for a few hours which is why they look kinda sad
Anyways, here they are...

You seem to have all the luck.. or maybe you just know what you're doing. I really would like to find some Weilli but I'm not sure they grow in my area. I have spent many hours looking for them but felt I was wasting my time. It looks like they are growing like crazy in the Atlanta area..
Okay, I am asking for a few tips here.
1) What are the chances of them growing in my area? I live 3 hours south of ATL but will travel north if need be.
2) How do you tell if the neighborhood is 3-8 years old? This is like the hardest part for me.
3) Do they grow in mowed lawns? What are some things to specifically look for?

First off, I would look extremely hard and thourough in your area first, they have been found once in macon, so I would say your not too far south. It'd be nice to find out they are more widespread than thought, you could help do some important ground work in mapping this species. However if you come up empty handed and are determined to drive north, hit up the eastern suburbs of atlanta, like lawrenceville, buford, suwanee, norcross, roswell, alphareta etc...Anywhere within a 1 hour radius or so of ATL is a sure find.
The 3-8 year old neighborhood thing is they KEY!! You have to look for those neighborhoods that have houses that look like they have all been cloned and are mostly some shade of white, they have small yards and the houses are right up on top of each other all crammed together.. If the building signs are still up, like "houses starting at 120$ and up" its probably too new, though I have found them in those kinda neighborhood before, but not in abundance. Also look for newer buisness parks and shopping centers.
Good luck!

Lk, sounds like you're working to hard........ you need to take a few days off.........the bream are hungry, and the weilii are calling you....( Lizard King, come pick us, take us home with you, before that damn redneck doo finds us....... ) ...... hehehe.........
I like the pic of'em in the grass (?it looks like bermuda grass?). Views like that are helpful . Gives you a better idea of what to look for when out walking around .

yes, very nice. more people need to go up or down there from other suburban areas and then come back down to spread the species. if they were down here in Pinellas county, florida...damn there are so many shopping centers and new neighborhoods being bulit, everwhere they are destroying the natural habitat. woooo.

lol. i have to say that this post makes it seem a hell of a lot easier than it really is. as part of my job, i drive to homes in newer developments all day every day in north fulton/cherokee/cobb/etc. i keep my eyes pealed, and hunt all weekend with the tips listed on this site in mind. i've yet to have any luck finding these weiliis. reading some of the posts here you'd think that we trip over them everywhere in atlanta.

LK, heh I find it kind of funny how far away from the ground that first pic is... Did you have to climb a tree to take that pic or what? Maybe it's just an illusion.
I am only 20 minutes south of Macon and will continue to hunt for Weilli's when I have the time. So far I know to look in bermuda and centipede grass (preferably unmowed?), and of course under 5 year old sweet gum trees.

Sweetgum trees aren't really that important, and never really apply as a guidance when searching lawns that are mostly void of any trees.
Hehe, I fell out laughing when nermski asked if I had to climb a tree to get that pic Nah, but I am a tall guy
Moe said they grow in tennessee, yeah, believe what you want. Moe says alot of things. He also says he found weilii 2 months before anyone else did, morels weren't even out yet.
Now I am by no menas saying they don't grow in tennessee, but I don't think they have been found there yet. I wouldn't be suprised at all if they did grow in TN, theres a good chance they do! I personally have a strong feeling they grow in south carolina and probably alabama as well, tennessee is kinda pushing it, and if they're in TN they probably aren't as abundant or common due to lack of development in mountain terrain. I plan to make a few journeys to those two states during prime season to see what I can come up with. It'd be great to find out this species is more widespread than currently known.
