Indiana Mushroom
    #16234108 - 05/15/12 08:35 AM (11 years, 10 months ago)

Hi guys, I'm new to the forum, and mushroom hunting in general.  I found the below pictured shroom on a walk the other day, maybe you can help ID them?  I'm doubting they're active, but still wouldn't mind know what they are.  They look a bit like Psilocybe caerulipes, but they supposedly don't grow in Indiana.  They do grow one state over, in Ohio, which is weird because the two states have very similar climates.  Anyways, thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Habitat: Grass covered drainage ditch along the side of a road, next to a large grassy field.

Gills: Very light chocolate or creamy brown.  Like coffee with a lot of creamer in it.

Stem: Whitish, with a hint of brown.  Fibrous, narrow, consistent thickness.

Cap: Off-white, toasty/tea-stained brown towards the center.

Spore print color: N/A.

Bruising: No color change was observed.

Location: Central Indiana.

Agrocybe species, perhaps A. molesta or the A. praecox group.

Thanks!  Agrocybe praecox looks like a spot-on match.  They're tasty, with just a tad of bitterness.

Since you seem to know your stuff, Alan, what do you think about Psilocybe caerulipes not growing in Indiana?

Maybe you should make them grow there.

I didn't say get mushrooms and try to sell them. I just meant get some spores or mycelium and spread it into your local forest.

Alcohol is bad for you.

P. caerulipes has never been recorded from Indiana.

Here is the official distribution map:
