It has recently come to my attention that the police station in my city has a little black box that records all internet traffic in conyers. This sucks. Supposedly they can only view with a warrent, but if you had one of those boxes would you just leave it be?
The solution to this is to use, wherever possible, encrypted communications. I'd personally like to see sites like the shroomery go pure https, so all that they know is that you're looking at the site, but not what on the site you're looking at.
Encrypt all email with strong encryption -- like PGP, or whatever it is now. AIM has recently put in support for strong encryption in the newest beta; ICQ has had it for a while, I think, and Trillian supports that too.
If necessary, you could use a tunneling proxy that encrypts all communications automatically, sends them to a second computer, and then communicates unencrypted from that one (which is, presumably, not behind that little black box.) This is advanced stuff, though, and a bitch to set up, but I think that there're some public sites and programs that'll do it for a monthly fee.
