^^ Pretty well said.

McKenna is definitely more of an intellectual, but he's not good PR for the "movement", if it could be said that there is one.  He's also not always good at relating his views to others sometimes and is somewhat confined to his own mindspace/universe.

Why would he not be good PR?

I agree that he was definitely in his own head a lot.  We all know, though, how hard it is to communicate what we're thinking to other people in a way that makes them understand.. I do, at least.  The more profound those ideas are, the harder it is to relay them to others.

It seems pretty self-explanatory to me personally - he is very anti-mainstream and preaches against just about everything society is founded upon.  Even the agriculture revolution - he preached about how it led to grain storage, then larger populations, sedentary societies, kingships, authoritarianism, etc.

Most people will turn a deaf ear to this kind of talk immediately.

Even people who take drugs, most would be more likely to relate to Joe Rogan than Terence McKenna.

From a mainstream perspective, we're talking some middle-aged, middle class white man with a mediocre, sufficient job in a cubicle somewhere, would look at one of Terence's video and say "This guy's a fucking kook."  I know my Dad would definitely say that.

Even the way he looks, while this shouldn't be important, mainstream society is superficial.  Look how his face sags, wrinkles, often grossly unshaved, wild hairdo, glasses, messed up teeth, hunched over with a somewhat understandably perceivable creepy voice tone.

Some people would look at this guy and think he was some sort of witch doctor, rather than just an innocent stoner who didn't know better like Joe Rogan.  This isn't an accurate judgment, but it's one that our superficial society would make.

I might even go as far to say that on the immediate surface, there are some subtle stylistic similarities between Terence and the Unabomber (I agree with a lot of the Unabomber's ideas actually, but mainstream society sure as hell doesn't).

Ah.. that definitely does make a lot of sense.  That's not something I really have thought about (as I was thinking about better health towards the community in terms of values, ideas/thought, and expression).  You're definitely right, though.  I doubt McKenna could appeal to the masses of our current society without some help.

+5 for that. :mushroom2:

Haha, I'm not sure if I would trip with him.  It probably would be a cool story to tell people but I'm not sure if that would be worth it.

Your signature is beautiful, by the way.  That girl is stunning.

Yeah it would only be a one time thing, and it would have to be on shrooms.  He's not the kind of guy I could see myself getting to know.

Larry Carlson on the other hand, is the man.

I appreciate what Joe Rogan does for the movement but I completely understand where other people are coming from.

He can come off as kind of grating if you are of the kind who really knows your shit.

Rogan has admitted that he only first smoked weed when he was like 35 or something close to that. And he talks about how he was all anti-drug before that and felt like the biggest dumbass learning that weed wasn't a big deal. Then basically he got into psychedelics and sort of became a spokesperson/advocate for them because in his corner of celebrity world not many were talking about him. I can respect him for this.

But I understand that to many members he can seem like that kid/friend of ours who talks way too much about acid. The kind of person who the first thing he says to someone on an elevator or at a party is "yeah you should totally take some acid", or just that person who goes on and on about psychedelics when no one is really listening or no one really cares. I know. I've been that person occasionally. That kind of thing can get really old.

That's the thing with psychedelics. I don't think there is any need to promote them at all. If you are curious about your own consciousness you will delve into them in some form sooner or later.

But that being said, keep on keepin' on Joe Rogan  :awehigh:

It's interesting to see how much he's changed over the years.  His personality on the new Fear Factor episodes is way different from what I remember way back.  It will be interesting to see if he changes over the years.  Hopefully he has a meltdown trip, loses his shit and comes back as a lvl 50 master shaman.

I wonder how deep down the rabbit hole Joe has actually gone.  He comes across as incredibly grounded for smoking DMT and eating mushrooms.

I think a breakthrough dose of DMT is enough to reprogram the 35 years of sobriety.

I know the story of joe..

as a kid he hardly smoked weed...grew up got famous ate mushrooms once or a few times(not many) and dmt about 10..loves the sensory deprivation tank..smokes mad weed, but works all the time. Hes not reading, he doesnt have the time. All he does is know mckennas basic theorys and concepts along with a few others.

if all he had was 1 DMT trip he is fine in my book

he can come off shallow, though.

he got flamed on his podcast once for saying 'fuck Buddha' because he says 'life is suffering' he was proved wrong and had too apologize.

I saw that podcast actually.  Joe was kidding.  He has a tattoo of Buddha on himself somewhere.
