'95 Message to Garcia by Kesey

MESSAGE TO GARCIA
by Ken Kesey
October, 1995

Hey Jerry ~

What's happening? I caught your funeral. Weird. Big Steve was good. And Grisman. Sweet sounds. But what really stood out - stands out - is the thundering silence, the lack, the absence of that golden Garcia lead line, of that familiar slick lick with the uptwist at the end, that merry snake twining through the woodpile, flickering in and out of the loosely stacked chords ... a wriggling mystery, bright and slick as fire ... suddenly gone.

And the silence left in its wake was - is - positively earsplitting.

Now they want me to say something about that absence, Jer. But I have to tell you, man: I find myself considerably disinclined. I mean, why go against the grain of such an eloquent silence?

I remember standing out in the pearly early dawn after the Muir Beach Acid Test, leaning on the top rail of a driftwood fence with you and Lesh and Babbs, watching the world light up, talking about our glorious futures. The gig had been semisuccessful, and the air was full of exulted fantasies. Babbs whacks Phil on the back.

"Just like the big time, huh, Phil."

"It is! It is the big time! Why, we could cut a chart-busting record to-fucking-morrow."

I was even more optimistic: "Hey, we taped tonight's show. We could release a record tomorrow."

"Yeah, right --" (holding up that digitally challenged hand the way you did when you wanted to call attention to the truth or the lack thereof) " -- and a year from tomorrow be recording a 'Things Go Better With Coke' commercial."

You could be a sharp-tongued popper-of-balloons shithead when you were so inclined, you know. A real bastard. You were the sworn enemy of hot air and commercials, however righteous the cause or lucrative the product. Nobody ever heard you use that microphone as a pulpit. No antiwar rants, no hymns to peace. No odes to the trees and All Things Organic. No ego-deaths or born-againnesses. No devils denounced, no gurus glorified. No dogmatic howlings that I ever caught wind of. In fact, your steadfast denial of dogma was as close as you ever came to having a creed.

And to the very end, Old Timer, you were true to that creed. No commercials. No trendy spins. No bayings of belief. And if you did have any dogma, you surely kept it tied up under the back porch, where a smelly old hound belongs.

I guess that's what I mean about a loud silence. Like Michelangelo said about sculpting: "The statue exists inside the block of marble. All you have to do is chip away the stone you don't need." You were always chipping away at the superficial.

It was the false notes you didn't play that kept that lead line so golden pure. I was the words you didn't sing. So this is what we are left with, Jerry: this golden silence. It rings on and on without any hint of letup ... on and on. And I expect it will still be ringing for years from now.

Because you're still not playing falsely. Because you're still not singing "Things Go Better With Coke."

Ever your friend,
KEEZ

i'm sure kesey's essay has appeared in other publications, stringphish. not sure where...

i dug my copy of this book out from under the coffee table hoping it was blair jacksons "An American Life" that you mentioned a couple of days ago ripple. it was put together by the editors of the rolling stone as a tribute to jerry shortly after he died. kesey's essay is the first one (page 7) of many. there are interviews with jerry and others and a drawing by robert crumb and photographs and poster art and a bunch of other stuff. nice reference.

btw ripple, have you read jackon's biography and if so, what did you think of it? care to share something she writes about Jer that might surprise us?

Jerry talking about a trip when he took a large dose of synthetic mescaline and a large dose of bears latest batch.

"I closed my eyes and I had this sensation of perceiving with my eyse closed. It was af if they were still open. I still have this field of vision and the field of vision had kind of a pattern in it partly visible. And then I had this thing that outside the field of vision was like starting to unravel like an old time coffee can, you know the little thing that you spin  around and it takes the little strip of metal off. It was like that and it began stripping around the outside of the field of vision until I had a 360 view, and it revealed this pattern and the pattern said ALL in incredible neon."

Jerry on the Acid Test's:

Nobody came to the Acid Test to see us, particularly. We got to play or not play, depending on how we felt. We could play anything we could think of, which meant we didn't have any constraints on our performance. We didn't have to be good, or recognizable even. We had an opportunity to visit highly experimental places under the influence of highly experimental chemicals before a highly experimental audience. It was ideal. And that was something we got to do long enough to get used to it.

"ALL"...

"... an opportunity to visit highly experimental places under the influence of highly experimental chemicals before a highly experimental audience."

talk about being in the right place at the right time.

here's a 1995 quote from bob dylan from the rolling stone editors Garcia book:

"There's no way to measure his greatness or magnitude as a person or as a player. I don't think eulogizing will do him justice. He was that great - much more than a superb musician with an uncanny ear and dexterity. He is the very spirit personified of whatever is muddy river country at its core and screams up into the spheres. He really had no equal.

To me he wasn't only a musician and friend, he was more like a big brother who taught an showed me more than he'll ever know. There are a lot of spaces and advances between the Carter Family, Buddy Holly and, say, Ornette Coleman, a lot of universes, but he filled them all without being a member of any school. His playing was moody, awesome, sophisticated, hypnotic and subtle. There's no way to convey the loss. It just digs down really deep."

they've got an interview in this rs editors book by jann wenner and charles reich with jerry and mountain girl at jerry's place, according to wenner, near mount tamalpais overlooking the pacific ocean from 1972. good stuff.

i think i used to have a copy of the book you're talking about. the cover of the edition i had had jerry laying on his stomack on the beach, head up, looking into the camera. i remember sort of a greenish color. he said in the interview in that book, as i remember, "i think i'm going to do this." talking about the dead but maybe more. talking about making a commitment to something bigger than himself.

course, as far as i remember, he might have been about to take a bong hit.

will have to read through this rs issue to see if it's the same.

I have the book your talking about. It's called "Garcia by the editors of RS".
Great book! It has all the interviews with him over the years. it's great to see the evolution behind his thinking. It also has the Kesey letter to Jerry in it.
And this also. An elegy for Jerry by Robert Hunter

Jerry my friend ,you've done it again,
Even in your silence the familar pressure comes to bear,
demanding I pull words from the air
with only this morning and part of the afternoon to compose
an ode so worthy of one so paticular
about every turn of phrase
demanding it hit home in a 1000 ways
before making it his own,
and this I can't do alone
now that the singer is gone
where shall I o for the song

without your melody and taste
to lend an attitude of grace
a lyric is an orphan thing
a hive with neither honeys taste
nor power to trully sting

What choice have I but to dare and
call your music who thought to rest
out of the thin blue air
that out of the field of shared time,
a line or two might chance to shine

As ever when we called
in hope if not words the muse descends

how shall she desert us now
scars of battle on her brow
beraggled feathers on her wings
yet she sing, she sings!!

May she bear thee to thy rest
the ancient bowers of flowers
beyond the solitude of days
the tyranny of hours
the wreath of shining laurel lie
upon your shaggy head
bestowing power to play the lyre
to the legions of dead

If some part of that music
is heard in the deepest dream
or on some breeze of summer
a snatch of golden theme
we'll know you live inside us
with love that never parts
our good old jack o diamonds
become the king of hearts

I feel your silent laughter
at sentiments so bold
that dare to step across the line
to tell what must be told
so I will just say I love you
which i never said before
and let it go at that old friend
the rest you may ignore

Some fall
Some climb

"Early man walked away
As modernman took control
There mind's weren't all the same
And to conquer was their goal
So he built his great empire
And he slaughtered his own kind
He died a confused man
And killed himself in his own mind"
