well if you want to get rid of them permanitly just throw them away in the trash. I usually just open outside the house and discard the substrate. Then i take the jar and throw it in the dishwasher.
Then i just reuse and since we stream/Pc the jar after anyways i have not had a prob yet...

This is what I do...
Take a Plastic Bag, open the jars inside, turn your head away, pat the back of the jar, allow substrate to fall out, seal bag, dispose.

Good advice guys. I'd also use a mask.

HI! Well I like to empty my out the jars in the garden and bury them, then I let them soak in anti-bacterial soap and hot water for a few hours. I also like to use a mask too.

You can PC the jars if you like. PC for one hour then open them with a mask on and dump OUTSIDE in the trash. PC'ng will kill all the billions and billions of spores that will spread all over as soon as you dump the sucker. You can also soak them submerged in 10% bleach water for a few hours before discarding.

calicyco: Really neet-o... never thought of boilin' it away before opening 'em!!!
Dishwasher works well if you dump 'em outside safely. In the trash though, the environ around you doesn't need to be populated with contams, especially if they're airborn!

If you think about it, most if not all the contaminations present come from the same air we breath or from the food we eat. You'd be surprised how much fungus we consume and dont even know it. It s like the saying that one person consumes 4 to 8 spiders during their sleep in a year. Im pretty sure there a huge pile of some digusting fungus growing somewhere in the ventalation system of my house on a decaying rat or something. I just open it, and put the mofo in bleach water, let it sit and then crumblem it up and put it in the trash.

afoaf uses mask, empties into trash bag outside with head turned away from the bag. Places jars & plastic lids in big rubbermaid with bleech & water soluition. Let sit for at least 24 hours, scrub and wash w/ antibacterial soap & water, rinse, dry, reuse.

however, safest way REALLY dispose is to throw it away w/o opening it but foaf chooses to reuse the jars & lids.

why wouldn't you just open the jars underwater in a 10% bleach solution?

PC'ing the jars is what i do, but b4 i'd thrust them into a bleach solution. even if you don't submurge them into a bleach "bath" you should still bleach your jars(and bands and lids) just to be safe. I make it a habit to bleach all jars and lids for amny hours

Just a quick note... chlorine (in bleach), stainless steel (in PC), and heat (under PC) do not get along well together... they make rust which turns an expensive PC in to a cheap and useless PC.

If there is mycelium present I wouldn't recommend throwing it in the trash.

I once let a contamed jar with green mold grow for many weeks until the whole jar was dark green. Then I decided it was time to open it and toss it into the garbage. I didn't do it carefully and created a MASSIVE cloud of spores in the whole room. I wasn't very proud of myself so I rushed my ass to get a grip on my lysol and isopropyl alcohol and try to kill all the spores like a crazy hypocondriac. Man, there was a thick layer of spore dust on the table which isn't good for sterility haha.
I should have PC it , never thought of that before. I wonder if it still green after an hour at 15 psi. Yeah, next time I get mold I'll let them grow and then burn their ass in the PC with demonic feeling of revenge over the contams.
