In your opinion, what is humankind's greatest achievement thus far? Is it the creation of art, languages, mathematics, alcohol?
I believe music demonstrates our capabilities as human beings. The fact that we can arrange various noises to create something pleasing to the ear, as well as express emotion through a "universal language" is quite impressive.

your right with music... I believe one day a person will be born.. who can attach images to their voice when they sing.. then communication will reach the next level of evolution... imagine a voice... that transfers emotion.. laguage.. and images..

Quite hard to say. I would like to say the achievement the Buddha had; enlightenment, yet it wasn't a achievement as a whole. I would say dance, it is a universal type of language, and is a sort of meditation in itself. Almost all cultures have their own variation of dance.

Although creation of language is quite an amazing accomplishment, I believe it hinders our capabilities of communication and growth as a species. With language comes many restrictions, and words can only express so much. What if we (humans) never discovered our ability to speak? After X thousand years of human evolution, we would probably discover a way to develop a different form of communication that relies only on emotions. Or it's possible that we would naturally develop some sort of telekenesis? Who knows? But I truly believe language, as in spoken/written word, is a rather ineffective way of truly expressing oneself/communicating when considering the "potential" of our species.

That really doesn't make any sense to me. Why would a species develop telepathy (by the way, telekinesis is the power to move objects with your mind) before they had developed language. If it is possible it should be the other way around, or the way it is now. Also, if it would have been a more desirable way of evolving, shouldn't at least one species on earth have evolved this way?
This just had me thinking as well. By all accounts I have ever heard or read, many of the world's whales and elephants, and even dolphins, technically have a more advanced brain structure than us. Isn't it likely that they would be more adept at telelpathy. Why do they still use vocalizations if telepathy is real?
As for me, I don't want to communicate telepathically. I don't want people to always know what I think.
But to get back on subject, I say language and science are our greatest achievements. To be more specific, nuclear science including the bomb and genetic engineering.

I have to think that our learning how work in a team is our biggest achievement. Sure we've done all kinds of cool shit with science and whatnot, but if it wasn't for good, reliable teamwork we'd have never made it out of the caves to try the rest of this stuff... Think about it. How hard would it be for one man to kill a Mammoth? They have found fosilized remains of bears that were 7 ft. tall at the shoulder and could run down a horse. We'd have never survived and spread as a species without our ability to work together.

Its taken home business to a whole new level, and equally has taken the spread of knowledge and information to a new level.

I agree with that. I have wondered for some time now how it will effect our evolution. Now I know there are several theories on what or how we evolve, but I think that we likely do respond to outside influences by evovling or adapting to it. With knowledge so readily available, will our capacity for learning increase with it. Especially because children are exposed to it as well. In some respects I think this has already happened. Children have an incredible capacity for learning and by just exposing to them to more information, in a form they can understand and enjoy, they seem to absorb more. But will this "information explosion" actually cause human evolution to adapt to it?

Someone had mentioned working together, "cooperation and collaboration."
Although I agree that this is certainly something we've gotten very good at, it isn't really a human achievement in my opinion - ants and other life-forms work in groups as well.. I think we kind of jacked their ideas ;P same with basic language in fact

in the long run, it's hopefully going to be something in the future.
some kind of concression omega point at the end of time.
but from what we've thought up so far... none of our religions or philosophies are looking like they have much staying power... so....
I'd say it's space ships. millenia down the line, we'll be gald for those early NASA investments as the russians choke to death on their own excrement back on earth!
