How to slow water consumption with UltraSonic Humidifiers
    #1622775 - 06/10/03 12:28 AM (20 years, 9 months ago)

I've changed yet again and have purchased a used Ultrasonic Humidifier. I'm using a Sunbeam 696 and it holds 1.7 gallons of water. It states that it can run up to 15 hours, and I'm going to use an elevated water container to give it a longer running time.

However, those 1.7 gallons of water have to go somewhere right? Will all that drain out of my terranium? I ask because my drain plug empties into only a 1 quart container right now. My terranium will be appromixately 30-35 gallons, and for now I'm only going to be running one terranium. I'm assuming this humidifier will put out more than I need, so is there any way to reduce the output further than what the settings allow? I am willing to moderately modify the humidifier.

I've got mine setup so that the condensation that collects in the two liter runs back into the humidifier. Just another peice of tubing, but the water container should deffinatley be above the humidifier, not below or level with. You want the water to drain in.

BetMom, I like your idea. Right now I want to keep a fresh water supply running into the humidifier only because my terranium is really messy with verminculite. Thanks for the diagram KussH.

you can use the 'extra resistor' method.
It requires opening up your humidifier, and doing a little soldering.
