Spear Hunting.

In the past, I have hunted rabbit and invasive bullfrogs with a spear. I'm a fairly decent tracker and can easily get close to large game without them noticing most of the time, I have had some pretty magical moments tracking deer or elk and getting really close to them... When I hunt, I prefer to do it barefoot or at least in light sandals.... I've been thinking of moving onto bigger creatures and trying to get one of these larger animals, and hence have been looking into African spears for hunting...
I came across Cold Steel's options and they carry some heavy duty Assegai and Samburus... These are pretty heavy duty spears, so I am not too worried about their ability to penetrate vital organs and disable my quary, even if it is an issue I have crafted efficient atlatl's before... http://www.coldsteel.com/samburuspear.html

I was wondering if anyone has any experience here using spears with large game and has any advice or tips to offer me.
Any advice or ideas are greatly appreciated.

I can't offer much advice on hunting with spears, but I do know cold steel makes really nice/quality knives. I love all of mine.

there was an atlatl thread going for a bit. i make them, but i haven't mastered my aim yet. it has alot to do with the flex of the spear/dart.

I agree. I used to fire harden my spears, but have found that green deciduous saplings fly much better than fire hardened wood in many instances...
Would you be interested in trading, selling or giving away one of your atlatls? I would love to see how you craft them personally and try it out.

i've been making the atlatls for sale. i get my design from the video by paleoplanet i think. i use pacific yew wood with a draw knife, wood gouges, and sand paper. i'll get some pictures up soon enough for you to see hopefully in the next few days. i have alot of preparing to do for mining. mine aren't ornate fancy shit, but southwestern style copy i believe, but of yew. i can't find a picture of any northwest styles. maybe i need to go looking through museums.

Spear hunting is extremely badass and I hope you post pictures of your hunting trips once you go through with them.
I have a few friends that live in Hawaii and they tell me they've gone wild pig hunting with their dogs and huge knives. That's something I definitely wanna do in my life time. Just a bunch of boys and their dogs catchin their dinner for the night.
