How many Shroomerites here were or are in a fraternity? I'm a Sigma Nu.

Do your brothers know about the Shroomery or your drug use? How do they feel if they do?
What compelled you to join a fraternity?
How do people on your campus react when you tell them what house you're in/how does your fraternity compare to the others on campus?

None of my brothers know about the Shroomery but there are a couple that enjoy psychedelics but not near to the degree that I do. Unfortunately my particular chapter doesn't see eye to eye with psychedelics or drugs in general (even weed) but I just keep it on the low down.

I go to a relatively small engineering school (although I'm an IT major) and had no intentions of going Greek but going Greek allows you to enjoy campus life to the fullest. My house always wins Greek Week and intamurals and I love playing sports so naturally I was drawn to them during rush  .

Generally our house is considered top tier on our campus, and we are also know as the assholes that win everything haha. Although some people may not like us, we're the best and we take pride in that.

Any other Greek Shroomerites fill me in about your house and campus!

Ha, I was waiting for some hate. While a majority of guys in a fraternity are frat bros, there are always cool dudes in houses.

I used to be, but then I realized I was being associated with douche bags, and I started mainly attracting the dirtiest lookin gutter sluts. It was obvious a ton of people there were there to up their self esteem, trying to fuck anyone they can no matter how ugly, trying to drink the most then fucking themselves over for it etc. (not saying this is you btw)

And nah never talked to many about the shroomery, but the ones I did were like fuck all that shit gimme some jager and a beer bong yeahh!

What fraternity were you in? I'm not much of a drinker at all. Maybe once every couple months but we do have some brother that get blackout at every party. Haha. They are all cool sober though so I don't really have problems with any of em.

You don't pay for friends. Dues go to various budgets within the chapter. Also, you're guaranteed (if you get a bid) a chance to get to know the brothers in the chapter. That is what pledging is about. You either drop if you dont like the brother or get blackballed if they don't like you. Assuming you don't drop or get blackballed then you generally get to know the brothers and your pledge brothers really well. It is hardly paying for friends. It's paying for the various budgets and the opportunity of lifelong brotherhood.

Also, I can't help that most of our active chapter is athletic and we win Greek week and intramurals... What's wrong with that? Besides, if you constantly prove you're a great fraternity with Greek week, intramurals, philanthropy and parties, then why can't we be a little cocky? Have you never been cocky and confident about something? :tongue2:

That sounds a lot like paying for friends to me.

With that said, I have no problems with frats, though I have no desire to join one. I have many friends that were in frats, and they're all laid back & intellectual individuals.

Ehhh. It can seem like a lot "just for friends" but there are also the alumni relations, the networking possibilities, and the fact that you can meet another member of your chapter from across the country and know information that hasn't changed since the founding of that fraternity. Imo that's a cool thing. Sort of like how on dmt there is that presence of something bigger than yourself, and, to a lesser extent, that's how it is in a fraternity. There's information that everyone knows and things that aren't spoken about but just understood. Nom sayin? That's worth it for me.

Yep. And they still didn't get any. I became quite the curious one. The dudes in Engineering that hated me would say I was slutty and then the frat boys would say I was a frigid bitch. The Women's studies couldn't tell if I was a lesbian or a closet slut.

Yes.  I was a Sigma Chi.  I was pretty active in the chapter during my tenure.  It was a lot of fun although there was always a big controversy over drugs.  Half were for them and half were against them.  Towards the end, we just agreed to disagree .  I joined because I was an insecure loser and wanted some forced interaction and networking shit.  I made awesome friends and in no way regret it.

All of my best friends were in my frat.  Several us hit fests and shows and such.  It's not all about wearing sweater vests and I don't own a collared shirt.  To be fair, people are shocked when I say I was in a fraternity as I'm far from the classical frat jock.  Either way, people who write it off as "paying for friends" are missing what it's about.

That is how our chapter is with drugs. More dislike than like them though.

Yeah, I've got several buddies that go to concerts and want to hit festivals up with me which is pretty dope. Everyone thinks of dudes in fraternities as rich, daddy's boys with nice clothes, but that isn't true.

Yes, because I know that they went through what I did. I can talk them about ritual and parts of the fraternity's history that A)Only brothers of the fraternity know and B)know that what I'm talking about is known by dudes that have just been initiated AND dudes that were active before I was born. There is a bond there that is rooted in history, and while I might not agree with them personally on various aspects, I can agree and talk to them about my fraternity and that will never change.

Frats are kinda like high school.  At the time, it seems like a big deal.

10 years later, you realize there's a lot more to life than being "cool", and drinking until you black out.

Hardly. I don't drink more than once every couple months, and, at least in my chapter, not everyone gets blackout drunk as often as you think. Maybe once every few parties... 10 years later I'm not gonna think about how I was trying to be "cool" or fit in, I'll be thinking about all the fun I had, with friends that are gonna be there for life, and how great the networking aspect of it was. I doubt you can get hooked up with killer jobs just because you know a person or two in a company from high school... No, that comes with alumni relations.

Well said.  I 100% agree.  I know several people who no longer talk to their college friends.  I, on the other hand, talk to all of my college friends regularly.  It really does facilitate deep friendships.  I personally know about 40 people from my frat days that would drop what they were doing to help me out if I found myself in need.  Genuine, lasting friendships are not something you can pick up at the grocery store.

Well I went to VA tech for a short while, kinda prefer not to say mine either, it was shameful some of the things they did.

Shortly after I quit apparently a bunch of girls got date raped, like 6 of them or something I can't remember, all by frats and they cheered about it and shit.

That is some fucked up shit. They should have gotten in legal trouble and had their charter revoked. Those dudes do not help the way fraternities look to non-Greeks.

Although, I'm not an alumni yet (so close though!) I'd like to offer a different perspective. Real career hookups will come from people in your chapter mainly, beyond that it's more of a conversation piece among members outside your chapter or other greek members. I think the whole drinking thing is about 50/50. I know lots of people like to go out and get fucked up 3-4 days a week and others like to practice moderation the 1-2 nights they go out. You form some really close friendships, though, through fraternity life and good friends don't just show up every day. Like said before I know 15 guys off the top of my head that would drop they were doing to help me if i needed them. Greek life, like most organizations, is what you make it.

Every frat (social mostly) have been known to "roofie" chicks... Whether its just that one bad apple or its what they do. It DOES happen, more often than not...

If you live the Animal House, binge-drinking lifestyle, well that's what you'll mainly get out of it! But if you focus on alumni relations you'll be able to get hooked up with jobs that would have been out of your reach had you not been Greek. Well said!

More often than not is a bit of a stretch. Sure a ton of dudes will feed chicks drinks all night to get in their pants, but to go and so more often than not they roofie them? No way. There is a think called risk reduction, and if something like that happens in the chapter and is brought to light they can lose their charter as well as get in legal trouble. If chicks were getting roofied that often you'd hear about it on campus at the very least...

The only "drug" incident that occurred at my school was with the lambda chis.  Apparently they used to have cocaine in the open at parties--a big no no.  Anyways, sure people get girls liquored up to loosen their "hesitations."  Nothing wrong with that; people do it all the time.  Takes two to tango.

I dont buy the hype, unsubstantiated claims are that 1 in 3 women will be
raped in their 4 year college term, University of Wisconsin is currently
under investigation regarding their rape policies and according to the
reports there were 80 rapes in 2009 on the campus of 10,000, this is claimed
to be quite high by the justice department but UofW says it's normal for a
college campus of their size

6 frat boy rapes doesnt seem any out of the ordinary

No, but I couldn't see them using roofies all that often. I know that it happens, but these sorostitutes will drink themselves just plain retarded and get taken advantage of without the aid of roofies...

yea, I'd say that that is pretty excessive.

In South Africa, one in four women will be raped. So much so, they had to invent an anti-rape device, which looks like a female condom that is lined with sharp barbs inside it. When a man tries to rape her, he gets this thing stuck to his junk that can only be removed by surgery.

Now that is problematic. And while 80 rapes in a population of 10,000 is kind of a low statistic, if even it exists, it's still not something to be screaming "ZOMG!" just yet.
