Yep. Although those mofos I would think would HAVE TO be declawed. And don't get me wrong, bobcats aren't exactly tiny, but side by side photos with mountain lions are pretty decisive.

It is annoying to go hiking with people who are scared of the woods and make as much noise as possible to scare away anything that might be out there. I think to myself "this idiot is a loud, annoying pussy..."
I always move through the woods as quietly as possible. I notice a lot more that way.

Yeah, I agree. I mean I'm not saying anybody who does that (is loud as a deterrent) is a puss, but I'd rather move with people who are confident and stealthy.
That said, in bear country -- and I mean REAL bear country (IE grizzly country), it's probably smarter to move loudly.

I don't make sound like a japanese tourist with bells and singing (I agree being noisy is obnoxious), more like breaking branches underfoot is enough, just the same as any bear or buck wandering. There is nothing to fear from these animals, but I have have startled bucks and bear before while trail running, one buck charged me and ended up kicky my dog who received a dozen stitches. So now I prefer not to frighten fellow forest dwellers out of respect that they may not appreciate your presence as much as you do theirs.
I spent the majority of my life living the national forest across the the gravel road from my home, If i were afraid of animals I would have been driven out long ago by the mountain lion whose den was 200ft from my front porch (their mating calls sound crazy).

that's actually really slick. I might wanna get one of those. I wonder if they're decent pets...
on second thought, finding an apartment that allows those might prove a smidge difficult.

I'm probably not the intended audience, but here in Australia, it's great to walk in the bush, don't have carnivorous animals roaming around, unless you head up north near the water. Nothing to worry about at all.

I used to go hiking beside this lake and loved the fact that I'd never see anyone. Found out the reason was because they had found a woman's body there. Then not too long ago we had a serial murderer caught in a local national park. As much as I hate it I now don't go to those places alone. Wild boars would scare me more than a black bear. No grizzlies here.

I have no problem walking into the woods alone. I actually do it all the time around my house. I live on 400 acres of land though and grew up exploring around by myself and with my older brother. I do worry from time to time about the inevitable but...if the inevitable happens ie snake bite, broken bones, or I run across a dangerous wild animal then...what the heck...it was meant to be.

Walking in the woods only bothers me when it's getting dark cuz I have bad eyes and can't see and trip on shit.

I agree. Growing up my home life was so fucked up(for a time) that I preferred the woods to being at the house. By age 13 the woods was my safe zone. Sadly I just don't feel as safe. Not cuz of the critters. Luckily I have a few good friends that are always up to hit the trail. Sign o' the times I guess.

Really wild boars more than bears? Here in Hawaii there are no dangerous animals (bears, coyotes, poisonous creatures), only boars. I always carry a knife on me when I hike, but I have NO iodea what it's like in the mainland. I'd feel pretty scared of bears or mountain lions. Probably would like to take a gun out with me.

I will never forget hiking with my uncle, aunt and cousin once in the Cuayamacas(sp?) in California. It was an early evening/night hike. It was wonderful, after we get in the car and hit the pavement we saw a mountain lion right in front of the car. It was freaking fantastic and scary as shit at the same time! I mean we had only been in the car less than 10 min!!!
I don't know much about Hawaii but don't you have feral pigs more than wild boars? I'm talking here about the suckers with big nasty fangs and bad attitudes.

I'm not sure.....everyone here calls them boars. Never heard of anyone being attacked by one, unless they were hunting.

I totally agree Alan, that's why I hike by myself.I tread through the thickets quiet as a mouse, and anyone I've ever taken with me,steps on every twig, and stick, and talks really loud.I hate that shit!
