Working with old straw ok?
    #1621781 - 06/09/03 08:44 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

afoaf had some recent issues. First off he found this huge bail of straw awhile ago and picked it up. Next he cut some up and put it in the closet. its been about 6 months and that same straw is still in his closet. Can he use it.

And Whay exactly does straw referr too.?
Is he supposed to have this extra grassy or not-so straw stuff.?
I really dont think he needs to pick through it to get the good shit out, should he.?

If it looks good (as in looks fresh -- didn't turn brown,) and it was dry for the whole time, yes, he can probably use it.

Fresh is best, though, so why not pay $5/bale for the fresh stuff?

From what I have read, straw refers to as the hollow parts of the plant after it has been processed for grains; you want less grain seed as it is associated with less contamination (Hippie3, Mycotopia.) Hay is the unharvested crop with the grain still intact, usually used as a feed for animals. I don't know if there is an acual definition.

Cereal grains are supposed to be a lot better than grasses, though. I have used both, though, and it worked fine. I go through it and pick a lot of the little heads off, but it's not necessary to get all of them.

All in all, IMO, if you have good-looking (fresh) stuff it should be fine if you do everything right. I do pick through it, though, just to be sure.

Just my opinion,
